Can I run GTR2002 on my system?

by Stephan Pasker » Sat, 01 Feb 2003 17:58:09

Hello,
I have this machine:
Athlon 1400
256 DDR-RAM
3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP
Windows Me

Now I want to know if GTR2002 works on this machine and what performance I
can expect when driving with my Force-Feedback-wheel, which usually
decreases performance a little bit.
Thanks for comments
Stephan

Thanks for the comment. Do you use Force-Feedback, too?
Hm, Im not gonna buy a new graphicscard, thats for sure.
Your Geforce2 and my Voodoo5 were close rivals some time ago. The question
is if GTR2002 uses the T&L-part of the Geforce. The V5 hasnt T&L and then
it could make a difference.

I wouldn't expect great performance but it should be decent.  I usually run
40-60 fps when traffic thins out with a full field and graphics high on an
AMD 1600/512MB RAM/GF4 Ti 4400 (oc to 4600) at 1280x1024x32-bit.  If you run
the game at no higher than 1024x768x16-bit, keep the settings low/med, turn
off some effects (like shadows) and manage the field properly by having only
enough cars to keep fps over 30 during the race you should be fine.  I
fairly cheap upgrade to an ATI 9500 or GF4 Ti 4200 would be nice for you.

BTW, FF impact varies greatly.  I see no negative fps hit with either my
MOMO or LWFF.  This is not true for other brands, notably the MSFF wheel
which has always been a relative cpu hog.

There is a demo of F1 2k2, that should give you at least an idea of how
your system will run.  Figure GTR will run somewhat slower because of added
track graphics and IF you run the full field, 37 vs 22 cars.  You can
choose to run only partial groups, and that will speed things up some.  The
V5 was a great card, but it is really starting to fall behind.  If you use
FSAA, then plan on no more than 800x600.

I pretty much had to drop the resolution down to 800x600 (plus reduce
some graphics settings from high to medium) on my machine after my
Radeon 8500LE broke and I had to go back to using the GF2MX400 (which
btw is quite close to V5 in D3D performance)... :/

Anyway, I'm mostly getting ~20fps at the start, and 30-40fps after
that, except at Sugo where I get between 20-30 when driving alone, and
something quite unplayable when more cars on the screen.

My 2nd machine runs a GF2 MX400 64mb with an XP2100+ and 512 DDR and
everything is on high, one or two things go red if i move them to full but
the fps is very good throughout.

What resolution?

I have a 19" monitor which is permanently set to 1280 x 1024 so i always
look to run games in the same res....only changes i might make is to drop 32
bit to 16 bit if i encounter any stutters etc etc

Not that i do...but things i wouldnt notice much driving at high speed like
the AI cars being in medium detail instead of high would go first....

BIG difference between a cache-strated Celeron and an AMD 2100+ running DDR
RAM, especially on a sim which is typically cpu intensive.  Not surprising
you significantly outperform with the same video card.

Thanks for all your comments. If I find a good offer on F12002 I will give
it a try.

Have a nice weekend

Are we sure that the V5 works with F1-2002 at all?  I know my V3
did not, nor did it work with F1-2001 (now have a ti-4200).

I ran F1 2001 on a V5.  I'm pretty sure I read posts about F1 2002 working.

I just got F12002  2 days ago at wal-mart for $10. Its just a jewel case not
a box version but they had plenty of them.

Good thought. Ill look at reviews of F1-2002 before I go and buy it.
