I can get on hawaii fine but my buddy keps getting "improper or illegal car
set" errors. He downloaded multicar.zip from the hawaii site and unzip it.
He now gets "can't load cars or insufficient memory" when trying to start
up nascar. Any ideas how to fix?

Reinstall.

Have him check the name of the .dat file that was unzipped. For
example, if it was "multicar.dat" he will have to name the directory
"multicar". If it's named anything else, he'll get the "can't load
cars" message. Try that and see if it works.

Richard,
For the problem of ins mem, go to gameopts.cfg and
change the car set name to an actual carset you have
installed. Like cars96. Apparently you don't have the
car set name just right. The game is trying
to read a carset that is'nt there. hope this helps.

Had this problem before....go into your nascar dir and delete the
gameopts file then start the game, everything fixed! What causes that is
the car directory name and the name of the .dat file in the car dir has
to be the same: example cars94 cars94.dat
