Where Is Everybody?

Man.....has anybody else noticed how few the posts are around here these
days?  I remember when a few hundred posts a day, was a light day!  Now, a
few handfuls is a big day.......why?

I wonder if its all this "can't talk about that, can't talk about
this.....take that to rec.auto.somethingelse...blah, blah, blah"....is that
what's doing this?  Of course, anything taken to an extreme isn't good.
Fresh water can kill you, if you drink enough of it.

As much as I don't participate actively in an F1 discussion, I still like to
read about it.  And I like the discussions between our group, where we are
"fans of racing" but follow different forms of it.  And I like reading
discussions between drivers who can turn right and those that can't.

Isn't "racing" the glue that binds us?

When I have a tech problem, I want to make a post about it where *everyone*
goes...so I have the best shot at finding someone else who has had that
problem, and fixed it!  When I want to *** about something some NASCAR
driver does (did, will do), I want to make it where everybody is going to
have the opportunity to read it....and comment back, even F1 fans!  I don't
want to make posts about NASCAR just to NASCAR sim drivers.  I don't want to
*** about poor TV coverage, just to ah, well, ah.........where, by the way
is rec.autos.simulators.badTVcoverage?  Is that a newsgroup yet?

**This is especially important**  When I want to make fun of F1 racing, I
don't want to do that in an F1-only newsgroup!  No way, Jose!  I gotta do
that somewhere where I know my NASCAR buddies will be around to back me up
if it gets a little "hot in the kitchen."  You know what I mean?  [And,
please don't tell me to take this to "rec.autos.sport.makefunofFoneracing"
because there is no such newsgroup.  There oughtta be though!]

Okay, I'm going to go start a new newsgroup.  I will call it:
"rec.autos.simulators.everything"  That's kind of what I thought this place
was, because it didn't have anything after the word "simulators," I just
figured we all sort of took for granted, the next word after "simulators"
was "racing!"

Guess not.

More than 1000 last week. Also remember that this is holiday season.
Maybe not as relevant nowadays as in ye olde days, but still.

There is a reason there are thousands of groups. You should start the
discussion in the most relevant one. Don't assume that because you can
spend large amounts of time reading a newsgroup, everybody can.

And if it contaminated with large amounts of ox manure, it will
probably kill you faster.

Yes and no. It's simracing.

If it was a generic pc problem, I would go to a pc newsgroup. If it's
related to a sim, this would be the place, fair enough. I don't think
anyone has complained about that.

So you think a newsgroup about auto simulation is a better place to
moan about the actions of a NASCAR driver than a newsgroup dedicated
to NASCAR?

Try rec.humor
If you can't stand for your own opinions without having buddys to back
them up, perhaps you should keep them to yourself.

On my newsserver we have these groups:

rec.autos.sport.f1
rec.autos.sport.indy
rec.autos.sport.info
rec.autos.sport.misc
rec.autos.sport.nascar
rec.autos.sport.rally
rec.autos.sport.tech

What doesn't fit into the other groups should fit into rec.autos.sport.misc
If it's related to racing cars, of course.

Maybe you should start reading misc.misc

There are several hundred posts a day and more than 2000 members at Legends
Central.  Maybe people prefer the single subject forums such as the ones we
offer or those at High Gear and BHMS.

Newsgroups have post fluctuations.  It's a very normal thing.

I can't really remember a time where a "few hundred" post was a light day.
Perhaps before the NASCAR community split to the upcoming TEN newsgroup, no?
:)

I think that most of the people who will take this attitude only take it
when the threads are to the extremes.  Look at everything we let pass (all
the historic racing discussion, the track visits, the real life driving
experience, etc..).  Sometimes we just need to set the limits.

rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated ;-D

Won't ever happen, sorry for that Tom ;-)

I think one reason is more and more people are using web-based message
boards such as Legends Central.

This isn't necessarily a good thing, but we're going to see more and
more of it. One of the big problems is that people get a blinkered
approach because they only ever read messages about "their" sim.

Not to worry.  Most likely it's the lull between major releases.

Actually it is probably because nothing big for auto race sims has been
released lately.

5 weeks vacation - the whole COUNTRY?!?  Wow.  I get 5 weeks too, but that's
just my company.  Most people are lucky to get a week after a year...
