Lap RECORD Questions!

by ASNG/F » Fri, 13 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I saw the lap records that were posted and want to know how people do
those times. I am a great driver like all of you, I drive at the limits
of the car always. Now the settings I use are the normal ones with auto gear.
Using this my best lap in practice (not during race weekend) on D tires
is 1:17.334 at Canada. The record posted here before was 1:14.084. This
is physically impossible with my settings and I tried other setting
without much effect. The best that can be done with my settings seems to
be a 1:16.500 or something. How do they do these times? Do they cheat or
use some superior setup? Here are some more questions:

-What input device do you use? Mouse etc
-Do you use traction help?
-Does manual gear-shifting give an advantage?
-Is there an editor to give 999bhp? I see it mentioned here.
-Where can I get this editor? What about that Lap counter or something in
the article above?
-Does anyone have a Mach64 2mb Vram videocard? If so does SVGA work for you?
I can't get some programs to work with it. I am worried for F1GP2 of course!

Please answer my questions and I will be most gratefull.

Thanks,

Those times are qualifying times. They don't cheat, setups are very important.
Most of the people drive with keyboard or with a joystick. You should use
manual gear-shifting, because it WILL give you an advantage. If you don't use
Traction help your times will be faster, but you have to learn to drive without
traction help. You can change your bhp, for utilities checkout

No I don't have a Mach64 2mb Vram, but with a vesa driver almost every svga
game should work.

What do you consider a normal setting? Most beginning drivers
tend to select an equal front and rear wing setting, which makes
the car understeer quite a lot. Try F/R 59/37 for Montreal and
set the brake balance to the rear (somewhere between 08R and
14R). This will give much better turn in. Don't use auto gear;
with manual downshifting you get a better braking and cornering
control.

Try Q-tyres during qualifying; more grip and your car will be
lighter due to less fuel.

Most F1GP HOF drivers use a keyboard, some a joystick.

The really fast guys don't, but it is very hard to control your
car without traction help, especially when using a keyboard. I
tried it for while, but I usually lose a lot of time in slow
corners, more than I can make up on the rest of the track.

Absolutely!

You're welcome.

try softer rear suspension, and stiffen up the front end
this should make the car twitchy and hard to drive in medium speed
corners. But its how schumi sets up  his car so it works!!!!!!!!!

Lap RECORD Questions!

Hello, I'm Steven Mestdagh, ranked 1st in the f1gp hof

>>>I saw the lap records that were posted and want to know how people do
>>>those times. I am a great driver like all of you, I drive at the limits
>>>of the car always. Now the settings I use are the normal ones with auto gear.

How do we set lap records? Well, we start by creating a decent setup
for each track, of course, to get a very fast laptime. Don't ever use
the normal settings! On most tracks, you'll need to set the front wing
at its maximum (64) to quickly drive through all bends, not at
circuits like Hockenheim and Monza of course!

CHEAT? Thanks a lot! No, in fact there is no way you can cheat,
because Dave Gymer (the hof-manager) checks all fastest laps using
GPPerf and GPLap utilities + authentication code (yes!)
For good setups, take a look at the top 10 listing on Dave's web page
or just mail him if you don't have www access.
1:14.084 is my best lap at Montreal, but don't think you can do such
a time just like that, either!

Yep, you can also get a little utility from www.mal.com, called
QTyres, so you can use more than 4 sets of tyres per session.

I use the keyboard too.

Indeed, I don't use th. I'm always faster with th off than th on!

YES

Have fun breaking the lap records

The reason the best times are so ***y fast is 'cos everyone uses faster FPS, on my old Amiga (it is relevant) I had
what I believed to be seriously fast times especially on Pheonix, then I looked at the Hall Of Fame times when my
dad bought a modem for his PC (i'm using it) anyway, they were much faster.

I managed to get loads of software patches one of which sped up the FPS, went round my mates and we loaded them
into his A1200 version of F1GP and I managed to go easily 2 seconds or more faster even though I had not played
F1GP for a yr (sold my A500) and could have made up more time had I practiced.

It's got something to do with the car responding more times a second to your input, which means braking,
acceleration and cornering happen faster.

THATS HOW THEY DO IT!

Steven, I don't mean to sound like I doubt you but.....the KEYBOARD!?!?!? Really?

I have set a 1:13.822 in qualifying at Montreal but I am using a good steering wheel (i.e. not a
T1!) and pedals which makes the control much smoother. With joystick or keys I can only
occasionally drop below 1:15 in qualifying sessions.

In answer to the earlier questions (and to reitterate what the other guys are saying), set-up is
all important to balance speed on the straights and in the corners. Smoothness through the corners,
carrying as much speed as possible is also very important. Last minute locking the brakes and
sliding through the corner is NOT a good driving technique!! Use GPPerf and combine with Steve
Pritchard's excellent GPA program to analyse which laps were smoothest, where you gain time, where
you lose and take it from there. If anyone wants some help, e-mail me and I'll send you my set-up
for any track you're trying which should ensure you are at least starting with the competitive
equipment. Utilities are available to glue you to the track or allow increased horsepower but they
are not allowed in the competitions I drive in. All laps must have authentication file and prove
716hp, etc etc.

Cheers!
John

You are right that higher frame rates make you faster. But you are not
completely right about that being the reason for fast times in the hof.
In the Amiga HOF it's not allowed to have a higher frame rate than 10 fps.
The original fps rate is 8 fps, and those extra 2 fps really don't give
you 2 seconds gain. Any Amiga can pull 10 fps btw.

On the PC HOF there's no restriction concerning the frame rate, as
almost everyone uses 25 fps there.

The HOF record is (at last check) a 1:14.3.  I'd love to see the .PRF of
that lap.

YES, what else?!

No, it's 1:14.084. Yeah, send us the prf of that. You didn't
slipstream, did you? That's NOT allowed for hof records!
