N2: Realistic cautions

by Toni Lassi » Thu, 07 May 1998 04:00:00

While racing a 50% Martinsville race, it sort of bugged me that
although a realistic number of cars spin out and touch the walls at
short tracks, very few actually bring out the caution. This results in
impossible situations like caution-free Bristol races(!). Another
thing I noted is that when racing on steeply banked superspeedways
like Michigan, when a car spins and hits the walls, it just stops
there, turns around and goes to pit. No yellow! Surely a 150mph crash
into a wall would at least bring out a caution, nevermind how many
cars were involved.

So I got to thinking: is there any information on how to adjust the
required seriousness of an accident to bring out a yellow flag, or is
it hardcoded? It would be nice to have loads of cautions in Bristol
and almost none in Talladega (if everything goes right that is - as
prooved by the Touchstone Energy 300).

N2: Realistic cautions

The basic premise for the yellow to come out in N2 races if the car is:

1:  The car is damaged so bad it can't move
2:  A wheel comes off
3. More than 1 car is involved

This is from experience with offline and online N2 and is not official but
should be close to fact.

With short tracks, the cars just don't have enough speed to cause much
damage when spinning into the wall to bring out a yellow.  It is
frustrating to run short tracks in N2 and not have the proper amount of
yellows flying.

I don't know of way that this can be fixed.  It seems to be a combination
problem of a too light damage modle combined with the physics that have a
car come to a stop to soon after spinning.

Most likely, both can be more accurate in Nascar 3.
