Heber, thanks for replying, but that is the first thing I tried. It
doesn't work.Here's an example: 1.366(darlington) divided by 30.050(lap
time) = 0.04545757071547

If you want miles per hour, you have to convert the time to hours, not
seconds..

30.050sec/60sec/60min =  0.008347222222222 hours..

NOW take distance/time..

1.366mi/0.0083472hours =  163.6472545801 mph...

Don't know if you need all those decimal places.. btw, you're about 7
mph off the Winston Cup boys.. <G>

Gotta convert seconds to hours. Ex. 30sec= 0.008333333333333hrs.
1.366miles/0.00833333333333hrs= 163.92mph.

No, its (3600 * track length) / lap time

Does any one know the formula for deriving the lap speed from the lap
time? Just curious.      :-)

Ooohhh ... c'mon ...

speed = distance / time.

So, take the track length, divide it by your lap time, and you have
the average lap speed.

Which is good if you measure your lap times in hours.  Or you like
speed measured in mile/sec or km/sec.  :)

To refine it a little, use:

speed(in mps or kph) = distance(in mi or km) * 3600 / time(in seconds)

The 3600 converts the seconds to hours, so your speed is in
reconizable units.

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Your time should be expressed as as fraction of an hour for it to work
(hence mph). So:

speed   =1.366 / (30.050/seconds in an hour)
        =1.366 / (30.050/3600)
        =163.64769 mph

Does that sound right?

: Does any one know the formula for deriving the lap speed from the lap
: time? Just curious.      :-)

lap speed = (track length) * 3600/(lap time)

-lap speed will be in km/h if track length is measured in km, and in mph
if it is measured in miles.
-lap time should be in seconds or else a different constant (3600) would
have to be used in the formula.

P.S.
Hopefully you won't get too many smart remarks for asking this.
