I converted a DOS 1996 CART IndyCar car set that I found at "The Pits"
web site (in the "WorkShop" section into a Mac file.
I have sent this file to The Pits so that others may download it, but
there is a slight problem -- the file cannot be downloaded yet without
an error message being generated -- the spaces need to be removed from
the file name. The webmaster is aware of this and has said he will
correct it. This should happen soon.
In the meantime, here are the instructions for converting the DOS
CART96.EXE file, which you can download *now* from The Pits:
The original CART96.EXE file, when unzipped, consists of four files:
READ.ME from the original creator, Chris Spehert.
DRIVERS.TXT contains the old 1995 driver info from the IndyCar II
package was not needed.
DRIVERS2.TXT contains the new 1996 driver info.
PPG96.DAT contains the new car designs.
Converting was fairly straight forward:
1. Using ResEdit, I opened a copy of PPG96.DAT (keeping the original
safe). ResEdit asked if I wanted to add a resource fork to this file. I
answered OK.
2. I create a new resource of type "TEXT". Then I opened this resource.
I saw an empty window because it had nothing in it yet.
3. Now, keeping ResEdit open, I switched to the finder and opened the
DRIVER2.TXT file using SimpleText.
4. I selected all the text in DRIVERS2.TXT and copied it to the
Clipboard.
5. Next, I switched to ResEdit and pasted the text into the TEXT
resource window.
6. I then used the "Get Info for PPG96.DAT" command under the "File"
menu and changed the type to "Cset" and the creator to "Ndcr".
7. I then quit, saving all these changes along the way.
8. Finally, I renamed the file "1996 CART Car Set."
Converting Replays
DOS saved replays can be converted simply by changing the file type to
"Rply" and the creator to "Ndcr".
Converting Setups (Car Settings)
DOS setups can be converted by changing the file type to "Garg" and the
creator to "Ndcr".
Enjoy!
