GPL: Winged cars?

by Bret » Thu, 20 Jul 2000 04:00:00

I've been away from GPL for a while (N3 mostly, when I have the time) and I
was wondering if there are any complete carsets available for download that
have winged cars.  This would be what, 1969 or '70?  Are there any around
or in the process of being made?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!
:)

not,
are not good enough to make it in CART-level competition..." -The Mole (F1

There is a 1970 carset. It's a bit old now, and the wings never really came
out right, But I plug it in for fun now and again.

I believe you can get it from the GPLEA.

GPL: Winged cars?

If you mean the high wings on struts, that would be early 1968.  There
were none on the cars in South Africa in January 68 (when Clark won his
25th and last world-championship race).  Every car on the grid had them
a couple of races later, and then they were banned after the Hill and
Rindt crashes in Spain.  Read the extremely nice book "Lotus 49" by
Michael Oliver for far more detail than I've seen anywhere else about
the seat-of-the-pants "engineering" that went into those things.  From
one race to the next, Chapman was tacking on more and more wing, but
they didn't have a clue what the real loadings were.  There's a funny
story in the book about one of the mechanics using part of a s***sheet
of aluminum, and then Chapman being furious because he'd intended to use
that bit to tack on even more wing!  It was so far removed from the kind
of engineering we're accustomed to today, that it's hilarious (but it
was quite deadly at the time).
