NHRA.....It ain't that bad!

I just picked up NHRA at CompUSA. The game is nowhere near as bad as a
couple of post indicated earlier. (IMO) You can manipulate the view system
in many different ways with seven different camera angles. The sound is very
good and the graphics are decent with my X-24 although the voodoo 2 seems as
if it is not being fully utilized. The load times are a little long but
overall it's a fun ***game***. I'm curious how this title looks on a Riva or
a G200 etc. Has anyone tried this on a decent non-voodoo card?

Can a Voodoo II run it via D3D and then what is it like? This is looking a little like
another CPR though. Hope patches are quick to appear and effective, unlike CPR!

I run it with a Viper330 AGP (Nvidia) and it looks and works great.  So far

some other people's times.

Craig,

Contrary to my previous post, I relented and replaced my aging Matrox video card
with a STB Velocity 128 (RIVA 128SX, 8mb ). After a couple of Win95 registry
tweaks to remove my Voodoo as the Direct3D card, I fired up NHRA. The graphics
are stunning, especially the burnouts. What's even more interesting is the
problem I had with truncated replays also went away after replacing video
boards.

With the RIVA board, the texture colors are richer and the frame rate is very
smooth. Tantrum has definitely paid attention to detail in simulating the
physics and behavior of Top Fuel and Funny Cars, and the sensation of speed
(especially through the traps) seems to be faithfully reproduced.  I must agree
with you, it IS a fun ***game***.

John,

Is 640x480 the best we can get for resolution in this game? I was hoping
for a command line switch to increase the resolution. I  took the game to
work and put it on a P2 400 with an AGP card and 96 mb of ram . The
graphics, and especially the draw distance, were much better than the Voodoo
2 graphics :-(  I really wish Tantrum would address this and "tune" the game
for the Voodoo 2. We could also use a key command to reset each camera view
to a default postion instead of having to exit out of the game to reset the
views. Even with these minor shortcomings the replays are simply awesome
with the  view system. As you mentioned, the sense of speed is excellent.
The "in car***pit" artwork is a little weak...but I can live with it . The
more I play this game the more I appreciate where Tantrum has gone with it.
I have a nice speaker system with a powerful sub-woofer and the sound kicks
ass. My only issue with the sound is that you can hear the "sound loop"
repeat during a full pass. When and if a multiplayer patch is created this
will be a nice alternative to Burnout. (I happen to really like Burnout).
These games are so different that I really don't find myself comparing them.

Yes, like Papyrus ICR with their Rendition support.  I've been waiting for a
3dfx version for God knows how many months (Years?).  Well, at least they
patched Nascar II, but I'm playing F1RS and my interest in ICR is fading.
F1RS even has me curious in watching Formula One racing on TV.

At the time when Papyrus coded ICR2-3D, neither the Rendition or the
3Dfx existed on the open market...I don't suppose you could have lent
them your crystal ball?  ;)

Cheers!

i refuse to buy another video card for this game.  it goes back to the
store (which i made sure accepts returns on nonworking software).

i'm assuming you're talking about UbiSoft's racing sim.  yeah... it's absolutely gorgeous..
i have yet to find anything wrong with it, aside to getting used to actual working physics
when it come to gravity and traction. (:  best sim i've paid for, and i'd buy anything Ubi
again.

Try pushing F6 to reset the camera views. Have you watched the incar
driver cam yet??  Definitly better than burnout!
