P60 w/8mb RAM.. can I play GP2?

by Whatbra » Tue, 23 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I am drooling over the discriptions of this sim. I almost bought GP1 but I
could not get the demo to work so I said***this game especially when
the new one is due out anyday ( this was last year :-( ). Now after
reading about bouncing cars and tire smoke and awesome sounds and sparks
from other cars and debris that does something and... well you get the
picture.
Here is my problem.  I have a lowly P60 with only 8 megs of RAM. Am I
going to be able to play this game at all? I can live with framerates as
low as 13-15 if I have to and don't mind shutting of a lot of detail. I
would like it to run at least as good as Nascar which runs great in VGA
and ok in SVGA with details turned way down.
I got the dough for the game just burning a hole in my pocket but don't
want to be major league disappointed.

I think you can....I myself have a similar machine (P75/8Mb RAM)and can
play the game in VGA with all details on with frame rates of about 16
fps.
But once you've seen it in SVGA you'll even accept it when it manages
about 11 fps, as is the case with my system. I then have trackside
objects medium and most of the detail on (except for sky and track
texture). If you'd turn down track objects to low or none you could
manage 14 fps. With the race, when a lot of other cars are in visual
sight, things are getting a bit slow, as is the same with for instance
Monaco or when you're viewing from points other than the***pit.

I think you should look at your videocard aswell, it might be even more
important than your processor or RAM. I myself have a Diamond Stealth SE
(1 MB) and that appears to be good enough for my system.

So, VGA on a P60 runs perfect.
SVGA on a p60 will just do, I guess.

Me, I've got a P66 - but with 32 megs RAM - and it's OK in SVGA - slow
but very playable practicing at Hockenheim and Silverstone (so far)

Better than Nascar by a long way for me!

Cheers!

Try overclocking to a P66 or if you've got $$$ to spend, the P133
overdrive chip.
