Hello group. Question for you. I downloaded and installed the Toca
demo. I try to run it and get this error message....cannot find
dinput.dll.  Does this refer to something to do with a 3d
card....because I don't have one. I get the start screen and I leave
it to auto detect....but then I can'trun the game because this error
message keeps popping up. Can anyone explain what my problem is?? Is
there somewhere I can get this DLL??   I want to try this game
"almost" too desperately.    HELLLLLLP !!!!!!

You need to install DirectX, most probably the latest version
DirectX5. You can download this from Microsoft's website.

Don't get too worked up though, TOCA is "okay".

Cheers!

Great thanks. Will my N2 and TPTCC run under DirectX 5?? I recall
reading,a while back, of people having problems with these 2 games
after installing DirectX. I play these all the time and would be
pretty miffed if I had troubles and couldn't. Is DirectX compatible
with all games ...and am I rememebring something I misread. In all
honesty, I never read those posts with anydegree of attention having
no need for it...guess I shoulda huh??

Anyway....thanks for telling me what to get

I'd recommend running N2 or TPTCC from pure DOS rather than a Win95
shortcut, that way you have no hassles with DX5 at all. If you do need
to run N2 from Win95, proceed with care. DirectX5 is a bit tricky to
uninstall, so if you do install it and have trouble it could be a
problem.

Check with some people here or on the TEN.games.simulations.nascar
group (localnews.ten.net newsserver). You should be able to find
someone running N2 under Win95 with DirectX5 who can advise you.

It should be, especially newer ones. Many new games actually require
DirectX5 before they will work.

Cheers!

The thing I find *really* frustrating is it's very nearly excellent. When
you're in the midst of the pack, with the little bloke's arm moving to the
gears, someone jostling you, the rumble strip...er, rumbling under your
wheels, and a corner coming up, it's quite involving.

Then you think... er, wish there was an N2 style mirror... or any mirror
at all for that matter. Wish I could hang the back end out round this bend
and catch it on the exit. Wish I hadn't read a preview claiming a 4 wheel
driving model and ultra realism (PC Zone a few months back).

I just can't get involved in the actually driving, and it's that which'll
stop me buying it. Sadly that may also be the case with Ubi's F1, which I
believe is sitting in EB waiting to be sold in a few hours even as I type.

I do worry that the market for serious simulation is too small to justify
the programming effort. But -- risky statement -- I'd be prepared to pay
twice as much for a decent sim. After all, software like ICR2 stays on my
HD for years, not the mere weeks or days of most games.

Mind you, GP2 is still on my HD but I hardly ever drive it, so maybe I'm
arguing against myself here :-)

Andrew

PS Fancy meeting you here (G_B ;-)

>Well, do you disagree, _is_ TOCA anything special? If a game is good
>I'll certainly say so, and recently I thought SODA and NASCAR2 BGN
>expansion pack were good.

You must have a Rendition card. For 3DFXers the one category of games
that still pretty much sucks is racing games. NFS2 sucks, TD4 sucks,
Psyg F1 sucks, etc. Compared to those games, TOCA actually looks
pretty good. Decent frame-rate and decent arcadish gameplay.

Not saying it's the cat's meow, just that compared to the poor crop of
current 3dfx racers it's not bad. When Nascar2 3dfx is finally
released, the bar should be raised a little higher.

I don't know about TPTCC, but N2 works just fine with DX5.  The best way
to run with DX5?  Hell, I don't know.  I never had any problem with it.
I installed N2 from DOS ( fool me once!! ), then just created a shortcut
to the NASREND.EXE and stuck a -dma switch on the command line.  Never
had a problem.

I'm pretty sure I saw someone say it would NOT be supported.

I have both Rendition and 3dFX, but run all games on 3dFX if they will
support it. Rendition is only for NASCAR2 and Indycar2 at present. The
best looking racing game is still POD in my opinion, and that in
itself speaks volumes. Ubisoft's F1 looks utterly amazing though, and
it's even quite fun to drive. No further comment than that, since as
with any other sim I want to give myself some time to get used to it
before commenting, but on looks alone I guarantee you'll be satisfied
(unless the somewhat bright colour scheme is not your taste).

As for TOCA, one man's "decent" is another man's "okay". Just a case
of semantics I think. It really isn't a bad game, and if it was a
flight sim I'm sure I would love it since it has all the fun without
the depth. Unfortunately in an auto-sim I'm not looking for arcade,
and so it slips down on my rating list. FWIW NFS2 and TD4 aren't even
on my rating list! Gave the demos two days to grow on me then deleted
even them - not worth the cost of the hard disk space they were
consuming.

Yep, that's one I'm really looking forward to. I do hope that it will
be a "supported" release, not like GLQuakeWorld. If it doesn't work
with NROS I can foresee more than a few grumbles. Since we Europeans
aren't allowed on NROS anyway, it's not an issue for me unfortunately.

Cheers!
