NASCAR Simulators To Cease Operation
Campbell, Calif., April 19 NASCAR has a long-running history of trying to
market itself in the big shopping malls of the country, and while the
merchandise does well in nearly every type of store it is put in,
NASCAR-themed attractions have yet to find big success.
Following in the footsteps of the NASCAR Thunder merchandise stores, Silicon
Entertainment announced Thursday that it was permanently closing its NASCAR
Silicon Motor Speedway simulators effective April 25.
The simulators, which featured 14 scaled-down replicas of Winston Cup cars
with the ability of all racing against each other, are currently found in 12
locations in 10 states. The franchises organized their own racing leagues
and were linked in nationwide contests, and the simulator in Concord (NC)
Mills Mall was often the battleground for drivers and team members when it
first opened last year.
The company appeared to be headed for sunny times last fall when it
announced Don Murphy as its new CEO, with an eye on expanding to more than
30 locations in the coming years. No one at Silicon Entertainment was
available for an interview. Eric Mauk, News Bureau Editor, RACER and
