Ya know, we lived without computers before.  Only 35 years ago, if I
remember right.  There are plenty of us that remember how that worked.  Our
city's water system even works without power.  It's called gravity feed.
Many cities have this.  Also, our water comes from untreated wells.  We're
pretty lucky that way.

EVER HEAR OF FOOD AND WATER STORAGE, A BIG GAS CAN AND A HONDA GENERATOR?
MY FAMILY WILL BE FINE FOR QUITE SOME TIME.  WE EVEN HAVE EMERGENCY KITS FOR
IF WE HAVE TO LEAVE TOWN FOR AWHILE.
NO, Y2K DOESN'T SCARE ME.

Well sir, we just spent the last 35 years feeding those dumb boxes our
knowledge. We have become "dumb operators" of "knowledge boxes".  Think
of the millions of automated processes that make a pizza delivery
possible.  And what did you _need_ to know to ingest it?  In a drunken
stupor, you could do as well as someone (that doesn't exist) who knows
every line of code and how to slaughter the animals [by hand] that went
into filling your tummy for a night.  Get my point?

With hand-cranked lift stations? Hand written bills?  Do you report a
broken main on a 'walk-in basis'?  Didn't think so.

Oh yes.

Oh yes, now you are talking my dear Watson.

Hell, why didn't you just say so in the first place.  I figured you were
like the other 99.999% of the denial-head sheeple out there who will
suffer a horrible death from rioting, looting, or starvation.

Sounds like you are prepared.  Good job! Now, you have a m***
obligation to save the lives of your family and friends who think "you
are crazy" for preparing for this "non-event".

Best of luck to you, and don't forget that the bank runs on deposits
will begin in less than 30 working days.

You mean if you have no power from your _current_ source?  No.  Get a
photovoltaic/inverter/deep-cycle battery system for the scheduled power
outages that will surely affect you.  A system which may be had for less
than US$3000.00 will propagate your GPL ***ion as long as there is
sunlight.  Think ahead, be prepared.

If you read my original post, you will find my raising the issue with
*no* insults whatsoever attached.  I was rediculed, then I responded -
end of story.  Get over it.

This shows a lot of maturity.

We have a true gravity feed system.  The wells are higher elevation than the
tanks, and the tanks are higher elevation than the communities.  We're also
small enough to do handwritten bills, and walking to the utility office to
report a broken main would be just about as fast as the phone.  Do people in
big cities have no idea what life in a city under 50,000 is like?

Did we forget the subject line of this thread?

Well, suddenly some insurance company's computer thinks, you're only 5

No, not a stupid question, just a false answer.  This strategy will work
fine in "island" systems that don't need the correct date.  The systems
we do need for bare survival are highly interconnected and *DO* need the
correct date:

a---> b--->c ---> d---> e

If system 'a' turned back as you suggest, then the data stream turns to
garbage in system 'b'.  Garbage in = garbage out for systems 'c, d , e'.

It was programmers who set up two digit years in date fields but did so
at the request of moronic management who failed to stop the nonsense
once the cost of RAM plummeted.  Moronic management also lent it's deaf
ears for the last **10 YEARS** to those few who saw this crisis coming.
Go figure.

You may die of dysentery after drinking untreated "city water" infected
with human corpses and other human wastes which runoff into the water
puddles which you drink from post-glitch.

.......and another excerpt from Glen:

Clogged, but not for that reason. Highways are shut down during martial
law.  You aren't going anywhere, Bud.

Remember that 99.999% of the sheeple masses are in denial over the scope
and severity of this coming crisis and think that preparations are not
needed.  VERY few will store fuel, period.  Of those who will store fuel
for generators, most will buy diesel fuel because it keeps longer and
it's less volatile -not to mention that the larger, more reliable
generators are diesel powered.

Why will you need a car in the first place?  The Blockbuster Video store
will be closed.  Where are you wanting to go? You should be home
protecting your family from looters rioting over your hoarded supplies
while the rest of the sheeple wander around in a dazed death-march mode
and urban exodus.

...and rig it up a 150 amp alternator to recharge your deep-cycle
batteries which power your GPL workstation.
