Naiive (?) hardware questions

1. Can one overclock a Celeron-equipped desktop from the big mail-order
shops like Dell?

2. Is a Soundblaster Live worth the extra expense over a standard Yamaha
OEM soundcard?  Why?

3. Are the TNT2 family of cards 2D and 3D?  What about the Voodoo 3?

thanks
Stephen

depends on the motherboard they use.  If you can find out that info, you can
find out if it is possible to o/c it by researching the specs on the MB.
You can also look inside the computer for jumpers or look in the BIOS for
software setting to change the bus speed, etc.

If the Yamaha card doesn't do actual Wave reproduction, yes.  I don;t know
what the standard card features, but histoprically, low-end cards relied
only on synthesis of instrument sounds rather than playing back actual
stored samples, which sounds a zillion times better.  For the 100$ or so
that an SBLive costs, it is worth the extra $, if you ask me.

Dunno about the TNT, my guess is yes.  The VooDoo3 series are standalone
cards, doing both 2d and 3d, unlike the VooDoo2, which was an add-on doing
3d only.

hope this helps

Difficult. The Motherboards used aren't overclock friendly. Beside
that, you'll loose your waranty..

The Live supports 18 channels hardware accelerated. I don't believe
the Yamaha does. BTW, if you don't do MIDI thing, go for the Value
version.

3D. They are good cards, but not the best choice for GPL. Currently
the V3-3x00 cards are the best for GPL. They do support D3D better,
IMO.

Have I missed something here? TNT/TNT2s are of course 2D AND 3D. And so
is Voodoo3. After installing a V3 to my parents' puter I would say that
TNT2 aces in D3D (more options, by tweaking I could usually get better
quality with no performance hit, but the differences are mostly minimal)
Speedwise V3 is naturally better for GPL since the game is Glide native
and TNT2 has to rely on beta OpenGL patch which has its problems. The
problem I had with V3 and GPL was that the filtering is something quite
horrible, the textures aren't blurred in distance so the rolling grassy
hills of Nrburgring look like they've been carpeted. Anyone know if
there's a way to resolve this? I've tried all options the latest V3
drivers have to offer. If you don't know what I'm talking 'bout, I could
of course put a few screenshots on a webpage to illustrate the
phenomenon...

Nope, I missed something, you're right....I had 2/3D in the first
place, but made a mistake after editing the message....sorry for
that..
