Can you go fast with a T2 in GP2

by Patrick Dog » Sat, 28 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Hello there,

Yesterday I bought a T2 at dynabyte in Eindhoven (holland)
and I did my first laps with it in the evening.
I was about 5 sec. slower each lap compared with using my joystick.
I was wondering is this just because I have to get used to the wheel and
the pedals or is it impossible to beat my joystick laptimes.

So which is faster: - Wheel & pedals ?
                    - Joystick ?
                    - or Keyboard ?

Hope to get some answers,    Patrick

BTW thanks for the tip on where to get the T2.

Patrick,
Most people will find a slight increase in their lap time at first,
and as they get used to the wheel, get a definite decrease in laptime over a
joystick or keyboard.

I got a T2 about a week ago and I, also, cannot come close to my times
with my FlightStick.  I find it difficult to operate the pedals with
one foot quickly enough, or operate them with two feet with enough
coordination.  For left foot braking I think the pedals need to be
a little farther apart.  My ankles are rubbing as it is (thanks to
my size us 12.5 feet).

The steering I like.  It's different, but I'm getting used to it.  I'm
having a little trouble turning in late enough.  I either run over the
inside curb or miss the apex by 20 yards!

Similar problem here. I think it's just needs some practice. I am using
the
top-of-the-line car setups I've downloaded from somehwere, and on a
semi-pro
level (!) my laptimes are consistently 2-3 seconds slower than the
leaders'.
However, I do notice that I am not always on the ideal line, sometimes I
turn a little too soon, or too late, etc. Small things like this can
make a
hell of  a difference in F1 and in GP2.

But, I would NEVER EVER want to go back to joystick/keyboard! The T2 is
much
more fun is much more realistic to play with (I play with steering help
off.
Took me two weeks before I could finally complete 1 lap without
spinning. ;)

The T2 takes a while to get used to. When I was using a joystick it
seemed that my tires would wear out faster.

I don't quite understand this desire to be the "fastest".  I know that
there are some people out there that wouldn't even think of using a
joystick or wheel in GP2.  Why?  'Cuz they want to do the fastest time
in GP2 and they've heard that the keyboard will get you faster times.
Oh well, to each their own.

Anyway to answer your question Patrick.  There is a large learning (or
should I say un-learning) curve when jumping from joystick to
Wheel/Pedal driving.  The first place to start working is the
"sensitivity" setup for the controller.  This may take some time to get
the right feel for you.  But, until you have this set up the way you
REALLY feel comfortable with, you won't be making big strides in lap
times.

Once you have this dialed in, turn off all driving aides and "practice"
with a good stable and conservative car setup.  Don't look for speed
yet, aim for consistency and smoothness.  Plan you
braking/turning/accelerating in advance.

Now you are ready to dial in the car setup.  Now start working on speed.
You may never achieve your old keyboard or joystick lap times.  But what
you will have achieved is a more realistic driving style.  One that
more closely simulates the real thing.  And in my book, that's what I am
looking for in a simulated racing package (software/hardware).

Just remember, all of us hot-shot sim drivers would never be able to
achieve our simulated lap times if we upgraded to a "real" wheel and
pedal and car and track setup. ;-)

Enjoy...
