With Jack's new job and all the delays, is GPaL finished before it started?

What ever Happned to GPaL?

The death of GPaL has been greatly exaggerated. The death of the development
machine on which GPaL is being built has not. Hope I'm not a persona non grata
around here!

So what happened? Got up early Saturday morning in hopes of finally getting
GPaL in your hands and removing what has become something of an albatross from
around my neck. I quickly discovered that something had taken hold of my dev
machine and causing it to run a speed that was approximating suspended
animation. Well after several futile attempts to cure it's ills by replacing
the registry with recently saved versions and couple of complete Windows
reinstalls, I frustratingly concluded that the machine was going to have to be
rebuilt. A virus was the only conclusion I could draw. Never seen anything like
it.

I just concluded backing up and comparing the several gigabytes of essential
data today. Will be kicking off the rebuild in just a few minutes. Those of you
that had the fun of rebuilding a Windows machine know how time-consuming the
process of formatting and then reinstalling Windows and all your apps, dev
tools, and patches can be. Once that process is complete, I'll resume my GPaL
coding. The only good news is that not a byte of the GPaL source code was lost.

Rather than continue to disappoint you, let me just say that I 1) am devoting
as many off-hours as my wife and new job permit, 2) am as anxious to get it to
you as some of you are to get it, and 3) will post here the moment its ready. I
think I said before that I wouldn't again make the mistake of quoting a date.
But I should say it again.

Please direct all letter bombs to the address below. Your cooperation is
appreciated.

P.S. For those of you with high-speed Internet connections (ADSL or cable) with
semi-static IP addresses, don't underestimate the importance of security. I
think I may have discovered the hard way just how vulnerable we are.

P.P.S. When it rains it pours. Guilt ridden about leaving you guys***, I
came home at lunch today to get this post up. Unable to even load OE, I
composed essentially this note from DejaNews. Sent it, but gosh knows where
that post went. Tonight discovered that I could open Netscape. Hope this post
makes it to you!

Jack,

Thank-you in advance from those who know the hell you're going through and
those of us who can only imagine. Take your time and do what you have to do
to get GPaL right.

We're getting pretty good at waiting patiently for cool stuff for GPL<g>.

Ouch, a rebuild is a bitter pill to swallow for sure. My condolences.
I am glad you didn't have to endure the pain of lost code though, that
would be too much! Good luck with the rebuild.

Yes, Ive been to the Win98 rebuild site many times. A real pain to get
things back together again. I don't mind the wait, in fact I wished that I
would have waited longer to install the patch :-))

I was wondering about the inevitable finally happening, that it, someone
taking advantage of all those IP addresses floating around at SB. I hope
that's not what caused the problem for all our sakes!

I had a system crash a week ago, had to install everything from
scratch again too. Even though I had backups of all my software, it
took me allmost a whole day to get everything right again. All the
patches, settings and stuff.... terrible.
But once in a while it can't hurt to completely reinstall everything.
I have much fewer problems now since the reinstall.
Before that, GPL crashed often, randomly. Now I don't have that
problem anymore.
Good luck Jack, hope to hear soon from you.

Yeee-ouch.  1 windows rebuild is 1 too many.  Believe me, that puts a whole
new spin on things (and I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm glad
that the code wasn't lost, knowing how much time you put into it...)
