The safest way to use the brakes is to do it
in a straight line, and finish braking before
turning into a corner.

When trail braking, you start using the brakes
a bit later and continue braking after you
turn into the corner.

It can be done with brake and gas on a single
control axis.  It is, however, more effective
to use 'left foot braking' with split axis
pedals.  Then you can feed in some throttle
to stabilize the car while you are using the
brakes.

I'll probably get in trouble for this one. Trail braking doesn't necessarily
mean you are applying the brakes, just that you are decelerating through the
beginning of the corner, and maybe as late as the apex. Keep Tom Pabst's
quotes in mind, "use trail braking sparingly" and "the fastest way to go
slow is to brake too late".
If you trail brake with a single axis pedal system, you are in effect, just
slowing down. Some single axis pedals use only one pot for gas and brake.
Applying gas rotates the pot shaft, and applying brake rotates the pot case
in the same direction, which of course has the same effect as taking your
foot off the gas. Others use 2 pots, but the brake and gas just counteract
each other. The CH Products EXL 500 used to use 2 pots and now only uses
one. With split axis, you can apply brake and gas at the same time and GPL
(does it best) and some other games will recognize the forces applied by
both. Thus you can squat the car (while braking) and accelerate at the same
time. Also, if you're not heavy on front brake bias, you can apply brakes to
put pressure on the front wheels and still accelerate through a corner.

In fact, I still have one. I used to include them in all *** computers I
built for people too. Nice fat wheel with good resistence, spring driven not
bungee cords. I used mine for a long, long time, not caring for anything
else I tried until I finally tried the Andretti Racing Wheel (digital) for
$20 more. Very good resolution, but still no split axis. I'd have to agree
that the EXL500 with split axis pedals would be a nice unit.

BTW, I like the trailer on your posts. "Super genius" and then you mispell
'realize'. Good sense of humor. ;)

Well that's the whole point of the signature file.  Your about the 50th
person who said that since I have it, still makes me laugh about the
situation.  At some extent, we could say I make Americans realise that they
aren't alone on the planet 8)

'realize'. Good sense of humor. ;)

Don't you mean humour? :)

BTW thanks for the Ferrari wheel settings - they have transformed the wheel
in GPL.

I like to try radical setting changes - but increasing the FF damping had
not even figured. Well done.

I just love RAS
