Help in building a DOS based system for ICRII....

by Jim Dougla » Tue, 29 Oct 2002 04:35:50

Hey Guys,
I've got enough stuff in the garage to build a DOS based system for ICRII.
I've got an original "Reactor" Rendition card a SB-16 with
the Roland Sound adapter. The problem is I have the "upgrade" version of Dos
6.2 and 6.22 but can't find my original DOS disks. Is there
anyway to get this installed and working? Thanks for any advice...

If you are asking if you can trick the 6.2 upgrade disk into installing without having DOS 5
installed, no you can't.  you will need a set of DOS 5 disks.

Help in building a DOS based system for ICRII....

Hi,

Did a search in google for "dos boot disk images"

and found http://www.bootdisk.com/ and
http://www.daniel-hertrich.de/bootdisks/secret.shtml (german disks),

and so on and so on.

Don't do anything illegal!

For any other ICR2 fans, have a search and download VDMSound if you
want to play in XP.  Allows full digital sound and even my MS FF Wheel
works fine.  Love that Elkhart Lake!!!

Regards all,

Help in building a DOS based system for ICRII....

Thanks for the info and links I appreciate it. Would I be better of just
installing the full version of Win98
and then going to a dos window and running it from there? I'm only doing
this for ICRII and Soda for the
Rendition versions.
Thanks
Jim

Just make a Win98 startup disk or download one.  Boot up with it and
then do a "sys a: c:" to transfer it to the harddrive, then dos is
installed.

You'll probably need sound drivers for dos and edit the autoexec.bat
or config.sys to load up other stuff like mouse drivers.

Oh you Dog...I've been looking for an original Rendition card for two
years...JUST for those two titles..
I would avoid win98 if possible.  Mainly for soundcard reasons.  You will
want your soundblaster emulation running on either irq 5 or 7.  The dos
standard sound numbers were, if memory serves,  irq 5 dma 3 (something I
forgot) 1.  You will also want a regular non-ff non digital joystick or
wheel.  An old TM part would work.  Newer digital wheels won't be recognized
by either dos or ICR2.  (soda did have a first generation FF component
tho..)
To install the dos update,  all you need is an image of the older dos
boot disk.  THe dos setup program just asks for the disk once for Copy
Protection and then carries on with the install.

I've got a set of disks titled "PC-DOS Version 6.1 with Compression."
There are five disks in all. I don't know if mine are upgrade disks or
originals, I've never even used them. If you think you might have a use
for them, you can have them.

Well I downloaded the image disc I think I need plus I have all my original
SoundBlaster 16 discs
and an Original Thrustmaster Nascar Pro wheel (non-FF) and a Thrustmaster
game card. I've got
a CH gamecard also if needed. I put everything together with a Abit BX-6 m/b
and a Celeron 266
Slot 1 chip and just the h/d,floppy and video card. When you turn the power
on everything powers up
then I get the check signal error on the monitor. I'm not sure if there
would be some kind of problem
with this video card on this m/b or not. I've got a Geforce 2 agp I'll try
in it tomorrow night and see
if I get anything then.
Thanks again for all advice and anymore offered.

I'm surprised there's never been a wrapper written to allow rendition
games to be run with opengl or direct3d via emulation...

Gary,
Thanks for the offer but I think I can do it from the sites listed above.
Right now my big problem is even
getting the system to boot up. I've tried three video cards pci and agp and
still get the "check signal" message
on the monitor. At least I almost know it's not my Reactor 3D card. I've
found a Soyo m/b online that I can put
another Celeron 566 chip I have in the garage. I can get that m/b for 36
bucks so it may be worth a try. It only
has one ISA slot so hopefully I wouldn't need more than one. I've got the
SB16 isa card and my TM gamecard
that is isa. I do have a SB live pci card. I wonder if that would work? I'm
not sure if it would work under dos or not.
Will ICRII work with the gameport on the soundcard? The steering wheel I
mean.
Thanks again for any info.

It should, I ran N2 under DOS with a SB Live card, the first one,
installing the drivers could be a bit of a hassle though, I'm not sure
if they have a DOS based installation routine....so you might have to
install Win9x of some flavor

Yes, provided you get the drivers for the soundcard installed properly

Beers and cheers

Help in building a DOS based system for ICRII....

Well I got everything installed and working. Didn't need a full Dos disk
after all. When you use a disk tools
disk like Western Digital ships with their drives it just asks you to put
the disk in you are using for your
OS and it installs everything from there. I installed Dos 6.22 and got the
ICR-II Rendition version up any running.
Very cool to drive a Indycar again. Then I installed Win95 to run Soda. I
forgot Soda needed Windows to run.
I figured since I was installing windows anyway I would put my two Monster
Voodoo II's 12mb cards in and reinstall
SCGT and run it in Voodoo mode. I got all the updates and patches installed
and played that for over two hours today.
Even installed the old Microsoft Cart game with the Voodoo patch.
Anyway it was well worth the effort and the $36.75 for the new m/b was money
well spent. Had a pretty fun weekend
reinstalling all this stuff and digging into the rusty parts of my brain to
remember all the Dos commands :)
Anybody know of a site that has all the converted tracks ready to download??
I found this site but no tracks
http://www.shanepitkin.com/velocity/icr2_rendition.html
Thanks for the help and advice

Dave,
I've got that mod somewhere on a old cd-r. I'm still tweaking and installing
old games to try out.
Guess it pays to be a pack rat sometimes. Are you going to try getting a
card and build you one?
I've really enjoyed ICR-II and SCGT more than anything else. I just haven't
been able to get into
Soda. It's pretty jerky video wise with this system. If I can find a m/b
I've got a Slot 1 P3-600e
and I may draft everything over to it to get a little more horsepower.
