N3 Remote Server Control

N3 Remote Server Control

by Bill Bollinge » Wed, 24 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Ok guys, I am by no means a programmer, but I what I have done is basically
make a system where you can control the race settings of a server remotely.
The system I designed is NOT the best.  However, I did this for a reason.
To give someone with more talent than myself an idea on HOW it can be done.
Here is how I have it working and if you would like a copy of what I have
already, please just send me an e-mail or respond in here and when I get
home tonight I will try to fire you off a copy.

1.  I am using Autoit to loop the races and add some detailed scripting to
run the various programs.
2.  I have a command line e-mail reader that pulls the e-mail race requests
off a particular e-mail account.
3.  I built a program to read the e-mail, thencheck validity of the e-mail
requests, and then make a  process of starting up the server, killing the
server and providing access levels.
4.  The autoit script then checks to see if any valid race requests came in,
then if they do, it will run those requests.  If no valid requests came into
the system, then it continues on in a normal loop.
5.  It loops back up to the top.

ALL race requests can be submitted via a website form and you can see an
example of what it can look like at http://www.racesimcentral.net/~teambrickyard
(click on server control).  One of my future projects will be to have the
server update a website to show the current track and settings it is
currently running.

Note:  If you are REALLY interested in working with me and know how to
program please reply.  My goal is to see as many dedicated fully automated
and controlled servers worldwide as possible.

If you are using N3 or NL with beta server, there is already a good program
out there called demons that does
most of what you are talking about

DeMONS doesn't allow you to run a *remote* server, it only allows you to
run one on the machine from which you are running DeMONS.  What Bill
wants is something like what TEN allowed us to do - nominate and setup
races remotely and tell let the server handle the rest.

However, I am currently in the design/planning stages for a program
that's exactly what Bill wants to do. There is no time frame for delivery
(or even a promise that the app will ever see the light of day), but
suffice it to say that I am beginning to work on just such an app.
