Just dled this, and looks nice - kind of like a realistic granturismo -
which would be amazig.  But, is it me or is the sound horrible??  The first
car sounds TERRIBLE - not unloced the others yet - they any better?

This title has HUGE disparity of opinion.   Some think it's the best sim
ever - some think it's a ramped up GT3.

The net code's quite good - the gfx engine not bad - the physics
reasonable - but I dont like their choice of cars t.b.h.

The sounds done realtime - a la staccato iirc - it's quite good I think

God my spelling is bad...

What's staccato?  Like i said, only done the first car, as havent had time,
but its so bad... Have u heard the replays?  The sound and gear change is
identical on each car - u get like a weird echo effect.

GT3 would be nice i think - as ive never had a console - the sound in that
is awesome.

Hi Rick,

The traditional method for generating sounds in a game is using pre-recorded
samples.  Stacatto, on the other hand, is a sound library that generate
sounds from scratch rather than using these pre-recorded samples.  The
benefits are that you dont get looping of sounds and you can control the
sound precisely, so for example, you can simulate the effect of the engine
becoming sick or a broken exhaust.  The disadvantages are, you need quite
alot of audio experience to make it sound right and it takes up precious
processor time.

I am also a fan of GT3, people look down their nose at it, but its a great
game with a more than reasonable physics engine (post-tweaked for
drivability).  It needs to be driven with a decent wheel (the LWFFGP or
Momo).

All the best,
Ash

Please dont say the sound in GT3 is realistic.... Ive never heard a Corvette
or Camaro, or for that fact any of the traditional V8's sound like a GTI :).
Its just a comprimise.. i'd rather have FM soundingish accurate non-looping
sounds are fully dynamic and can be change than completley wrong
pre-recorded sounds. Things like induction noise is very hard to simulate
with pre-recorded wav's but can be done with they way they made LFS.

I've never even seen a Camaro, so i dont know :D

But, whatever, they sound really nice, and add loads to the environment.

Simulate all u like, but if it sounds pants, what's the point.

Rick.

Part of the racing simulation's nature, is to push the envelop, "somewhere".
If nobody ever attempts to do a realistic dynamic engine  which simulates a
true engine, with true virtual pistons revving up, nobody will.  They will
continue with the looped .wav files, which in the long road, is bad.   We
truly need realistic audio feedback.

So at first, they will be pants for sure.  But it's a problem we can cope
with.  I mean, along the way, when developpers will start coupling with
real-time engine deformation of polygons (into multiple others) for tyre
modeling, or into real-time modeling of the 3d game engine instead of having
to rely on an exterior set of physics, they will be pants also.
