GPL: just upgraded to Duron 850.

So far so good.

My old computer is now a server.  A celeron 466 w/128MB.

I have transplanted my Voodoo 3 2000 to my new Duron 850.  The
motherboard is an Abit AT7A (non-raid).  128MB.  My wheel is a
Logitech Wingman FF.  17" Trinitron tube.

I can now run 1024x768 at 36FPS almost constantly.  And even I am
running a practice session, I can even bump that up!  This game gets
better when you upgrade.  This game is just amazing!  THANK YOU
PAPYRUS/SIERRA for the greatest sim ever.

Maybe N4 comes close to GPL.  I don't know.  But because GPL features
F1 cars from the 60's around circuits that turn left and right, and
have very few chicanes, GPL is still tops in my books..

I also have GP3 and the graphics still look like crap.  The game
itself is pretty good.  Crammand spent two years doing what everyone
and his brother wanted:  weather conditions.  He prettied GP3 up a bit
over GP2.  But he did what his fans wanted:  weather!

If you are thinking about upgrading for GPL, JUST DO IT!  GPL is well
worth it.

GPL: just upgraded to Duron 850.

Thanks for the post. I'm thinking of off swapping my celeron 400 for a P3
700+ and it nice to know that it'll be worth it ( I also have a V3 2000
and 128Mb, 17" mon but non FF wheel).  A question though, what sort
graphic settings do you have in GPL? I run 1024x768 now and get 36 fps but
without any special effects (smoke, fire, etc) and a lot of mirror detail
turned down. Do you have any fps numbers comparing before and after the
upgrade?

Thanks
Ken

I was running the detail level at mid-way up the scale.  Everything
else was turned on except fences in mirrors.  800x600.

With the Duron 850, everything is turned on, full detail level and
1024x768.  I get 36FPS almost constantly.  It does dip down to 33 or
so when I start doing doughnuts with a lot of smoke.

I can also run 1024x768 with Quake 3 Arena.  But I only get 25FPS with
that.  Maybe upwards of 30.

Firstly please don't post in HTML.  Newsgroups were always intended
for content.  Not style  Thanks.

I'd go for the Duron 850 or even 900 if its out.  It's only a few
bucks more.

BTW the Duron 850 is running well within termperature requirements.
During a game it hits maybe 105F.  But its usually running 75-95F.  I
don't overclock since CPUs are rather cheap.  I won't comment on
overclocking though.
