Look at this picture of the 3DFX Voodoo5 6000!  http://www.racesimcentral.net/
bin/stompedshot.cgi?image=/pics/winhec/v5_6000_1.jpg It's rather large don't you
think?  In all seriousness the 5500 does look pretty normal though ;)

Trust me, I've been a die hard 3DFX fan from the beginning.  The only reason I
have a GeForce now is because of Dell's great deal on the 64MB card.  I realize
that some people have problems with the NVidia cards.  So did I - in Win98.  I
have NO problems with it in any of my titles in Win2000.  I'm running the 514
drivers (although a lot say the 513's are better).

I thought that I would just write this card off and buy a Voodoo5 5500 when they
came out.  Then I saw these benchmarks at Sharky's Extreme between a 32MB GeForce
256 DDR and the Voodoo5 5500 at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

It doesn't look too good for 3DFX.  I'm truly sad to say that.  If the 32MB
GeForce 256 DDR can beat the next generation 3DFX Voodoo5 on most benchmarks
(including 3D WinBench 2000)  What's going to happen when the new GeForce2 GTS
hits the shelves?

3DFX is a half year behind, and not even using T&L. They're lucky nVidia
hasn't solved the memory bandwith on the GTS 2. That makes the card look
less spectaculair than it is.When I first heard about the Voodoo 5 6000 some
time ago I was sure I wasn't going to buy it, no I'm quite sure I will not.
Unless the driver tweaking brings out something spectacular.
I think I'll wait for the first GTS 2's to be tested with GPL, if it works
ok I'll buy one. Otherwise I'll have to stick with 3DFX and that would be a
Voodoo 5 5500, nothing really special but I'm not going to spend double the
money on a 6000 when it's not super.
So let's hope 3DFX gets its act together.
IMHO they have focussed far too much on the FSAA, they should have focussed
on T&L and have a '2nd' generation T&L chip to compete with the GTS.
I really think they are in serious trouble, I've always been a nice customer
(buying a Voodoo 1&2&3 (3000)), but I'm not sure my next card will be from
3DFX. I'm wondering how many others feel this way.

BTW david sorry for the email, just the control enter combi again.

Did you look closely at those benchmarks?  They show the V5 ahead of the
GeForce at 1024*768 and above.  The speed at 640*480 and 800*600 is
irrelevant, since you won't be buying a $300 video card to play at these
resolutions.  Also this is comparing mature drivers on the GeForce against
beta drivers and a beta board for the V5.  Also the GeForce is particularly
good at OpenGL, whereas the V5 is a mile ahead in D3D performance.   And, of
course, GPL needs Glide.
Plus the GeForce 2 GTS (not shown in those benchmarks) with all it's speed
only end up being 15% faster than a V5, and since it's $50 more expensive
thats fair enough.
The V5 also suffers a lot less slow-down from running FSAA.  If you want a
card to play GPL with anti-aliasing, the V5 is still the best bet.

I just looked at the picture and there was one thing I couldn't believe.
The name of the guy holding the card is Bubba.  Do people really christen
their children Bubba?  Only in America I suppose.

Cheers

Phil

PS Apologies to anyone on the NG called Bubba

I looked closely.  Let's just say that I was "underwhelmed" with the performance
increase of a next-generation card compared to current technology.

Here's some benchmark results for both the Voodoo5 5500 and the GeForce2 GTS
