F1RS2 Review in PCZone (UK)

by Mark » Thu, 24 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi there,

Just got the new PCZone yesterday which has a review of Monaco Racing
(F1RS2).  They gave it 92% (cf 93% for F1RS1) but it was only a short
review and didn't really go into detail about the career and retro
modes.  Said the graphics were much better and overall it is a worthy
upgrade for those who liked the original.

Oh yeah I think they said a fast processor would be needed - I guess i
had better get that 300A sooner rather than later now.

They surprisingly claim it is out now though - has anyone seen it in the
shops or is this the usual guesstimation based on lead times?

Mark

ps: they also review GPL (90%) and say it will be out on 17th Oct in the
UK for those who care.

Twas a poor issue of Zone. I've played in quite heavy detail a number of the
games reviewed, and it's apparently obvious that the people who've reviewed
have not really touched the games, or even know what the games are about. To
be taken with a grain of salt, that issue.

Remember that for at least a week, probably 2 weeks of the current issue's
writing time, the journo's would have been attending developer/publisher
events pre and post ECTS so would generally be sporting hideous hangovers when
they finally got round to writing :)

Too right, the only reviews that really coun't are those posted on this
group. While opinions differ, if people argue passsionately for a game
(GP2 vs F1RS!!) they at least show how highly they regard it.

[Note the lack of Prost GP is great! and JHerbert'sGP is great! posts]

btw if anyone has it (I don't know when it's out), lets have a *decent*
review...

You are kidding I hope? There is some legitimate info here but also A LOT of
emotional cheerleading. I've been guilty of it myself.

Does it mean the game come out without F1 License?

Yes, it does come out without the F1 license, which is not so bad if you
consider that Ubi could that time develop a complete multiplayer option
including Internet support, via a Game Service.
Moreover, an editor will enable you to replace the "anonymous" names & logos
for every team & driver, a la F1GP if you remember that. Well more than that
actually since you'll also be able to toy with cars & even track textures, a
file converter should be included with the game.

Hmm well.. I agree and disagree...

If I had the choice between

1) a *** magazine reviewers who is mostly knows more airsims or
sports-title (it's mostly where racing sims are categorized in ***
magazines). The mag was probably paid so that they don't really crush the
title too much... About 80% is made from Public relation stuff just to be
careful.. easy words, telling the bad points in a PC way, etc... The racing
title he raced the more is probably DaytonaUSA at his local-arcade.

2) a newsgroup of mostly hard-core racers who are maybe a little bit biased
toward their personal preference but still know the difference between a
***title (per example Prost GP (hey I didn't mentioned C:PR David ;-D ))
to a simulator that is at least 1year in advance from any other title on the
market (GPL).

I would probably tend to the second group... At least we have debates.
Debates = multiple opinions, what a *** magazine doesn't have. I think
that's really a big +  for this newsgroup. Sure it's not perfect and somehow
biased (I doubt I saw anybody who took the defense of Prost GP hehe), but
it's way more accurate than a *** magazine.

Im not taking each's opinion of the title but the "Global newsgroup's
opinion" of the title. So indeed the "GNO" has a BIG approval for GPL.  It's
mixed for C:PR and the next Monaco GrandPrix. Probably big zero for Prost
GP.

I'm guilty also of "favoritism" or biased-opinion.  I mean.. Im really mad
at Ubisoft's decision of only having gamers are testers for their serious
racing titles (F1RS + MGP). Since they are based in my city, I just found it
unacceptable, and that's why even if I somehow "enjoy" F1RS Im probably
really bashing them for the ***MGP hehe (it's really crap, don't pay 50$
for F1RS + v1.10 patch)

Exactly, we race sims week-in week-out. We know all the tricks and tips,
and we can spot the areas of weakness that a reviewer would miss. That's
why GPL should be good - from what I gather it is being tested by
experienced sim racers. Well done Papyrus! (Although as a GP2 fan it
makes me sick to say it ;-)).

This I like!***this licencing bullshit, especially when the F1 arseholes won't allow
multiplay on the net. Who the *** are these bozos kidding! Now if only they fixed that
stupid grass slowdown it might be a case of who cares about GP3!

Sorry, it's currently being tested by only a few people but rest
asssured it will be the strictest league anywhere. Look out for a
posting on this group when it goes 'public'.
