Killing my PC

Ok here i am a PC vetren, i`ve been building and playing PC`s for about uhm,
when Nascar came out, i think it was say 9-10years ago.
Well my current PC which ive had some time now is killing my head.
I`ve been using 98SE for a long time ago, and about 12 weeks ago i put on
XP.. i did all the drivers, for my Geforce 4, Soundcard, Via chipset, USB
drivers, mother board and AMD drivers..and guess what.. i can play Jedi
Knight 2, and medal of honor, but my passion is racing games.
Well in Gp4 i get all the way into the car and it does a quick blue screen
and back to desktop.. and it does the same thing with F1-2002.. I`ve
completle unistalled them even down to taking out the reg keys.. reinstalled
them and the same thing...

I may give away my pc soon...
for a couple of quid.

gggrrrhhh

Perhaps if you were to provide just a little more detailed info on your
computers components, one of the racing PC repair gurus might have a few
ideas.

I thought XP wasn't *supposed* to give blue screens...?

There is a difference MR NEGATIVE :)   You see the win98 garden
variety is the BSOD(Blue Screen of DEATH)  The XP version is BSMW(Blue
Screen Mortally Wounded).
XP still farts and fails and screws up just like all the other MS OS's.  But
at least it doesn't fall down into a coma.  Ah Progress!

When XP gives a blue screen, there's usually a logical explanation - not so
with 98

erm... if I may try to further refine that statement :-) the reason for that
is that XP in a user-friendly attempt to make it easier for the average user
to understand the causes of bluescreens, already gets them in response to
little everyday problems, whereas 98 would only have gotten them after
complex violations which are, of course, more difficult to understand for
the user ;-)

In an attempt to make this a particularly satisfactory experience for the
user, XP also offers a written explanation of the bluescreen, although
unnamed sources suspect that these explanations are selected randomly and
are not actually linked to the cause of the bluescreen ;-)

XP is simply being user-friendly ;-)

p.s.: all of the above is just a friendly joke ;-)

Well, Paulinho,

Sounds like you have a bit more experience than I,
but I've built a few...

If it's just racing games, perhaps it's a USB problem...
Assuming that you have a USB wheel that you only use with
the racing games.
Tho', I see that you installed a USB driver....

Or... Video drivers, I had massive instabilities with the Det4
40.72's in XP. (random reboots)
Both WHQL and non-WHQL. The new 41.09's solved that.
Could've gone back to the Det3's, but I like the new features...

I just built a 2.66Ghz P4/Abit BE7-Raid I845PE/XP Pro SP1
that hasn't crashed since I built it (over a month).
I've been so impressed with it that I'm seriously considering
converting my other two systems to Intel P4 CPUs/Chipsets
(a Via 733/PIII and a Via AMD 1600+).
My Via PIII is rock-solid under Win2K Pro (and slow),
but the AMD system is still cranky on a regular basis.
Great temps too, mostly under 40degC!
I used to have another AMD system that was just as moody.
My problems could easily be "operator error", but the Intel system
has me thinking otherwise.
I'm moving away from AMD/Via.

Wish I could offer more...

Good luck with it!

Actually, a default install of XP Home won't even give you a blue
screen.  Instead, it will reboot your computer for you, all by itself!

Was great fun troubleshooting some hardware issues before realizing
what it was doing and fixing it so I saw an actual error message.

Well I`ve spent the day fixing it, i put 98 SE back on lol... nice fresh
install never hurts.
I know most of 98`s faults... I did try the latest Nvid drivers, but yet the
same thing happened, i just got fed up with it.
My Ghost Recon wouldnt work, so i got it on my X-box instead, i hate to
admit it but its far better, just press on.
I must be getting old or something.

LOL,
Thanks for all the help, I will return to an Intel on my next uypgrade, when
i bought my 1.4hz AMD thunderbird the guy in the shop gritted his teeth and
sucked in some air, I`ve found it great, apart from on XP.?
