J.P., If you're looking for covers for the converted GPL tracks, you can
find a selection here: http://www.racesimcentral.net/

or here:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Or you can make your own<g>. I too, was tired of the black rectangles, and
once I discovered Klaus Horbrand's excellent Winmip utility, figured
anything I could put in their place was an improvement.

BTW, I know original artwork that you used for your covers very well, it's
on my bookshelf<g>. They came from "The Programme Covers Project" web site
if I'm not mistaken? http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Hi all,

I'm getting my feet wet with a bit of GPL editing, starting with a
couple of covers. I've stuck them up in alt.binaries.simulators autos.
Nothing revolutionary, just some experiments, but I like them better
than the defaults, so I thought I'd share them if you're interested.
Hickory and Loudon covers and a Dubai cover and modified event page. (I
stuck the map in...)

Enjoy if you like,

Hi Don,

Thanks for the tips for covers. I've got all I can find, excluding some of
the...ermm...more revealing ones from Turn1. I've been making my own for the
ones I haven't seen covers for yet. Hopefully a real artist will be doing
those soon.

You've recognized the general source for the images, but they didn't come from
that page. I've been fooling around with taking screen shots (something I've
just learned how to do) and then manipulating the results w/Paint and LView.
The images came from a couple of short mpegs from the film I found on the Net,
I forget where. Let the flames begin...<g>

Look for actual GPL screenshot covers soon... maybe...8^).

Hi Don,

Whoops! You're referring to the first set I put up w/ little or no announcement.
Yes, you're right. That was the source. I've got that book -somewhere- in my
closet (it's a -deep- closet...8^o). I like the new ones better.

Was it you who posted about the post-WW II theatres i.e. Ciinemascope...-HUGE-
curved screens, deep, wide seats...where you first saw Grand Prix? Looks like
they're coming back.

"Post WWII"....you make it sound around 1950! Heavens above, give us a
break, J.P. we aren't THAT old!!!!

It was *WELL* after WWII.........I know the first such theatre (Cinerama)
popped up here (Oz) around 1964/65 (triple projectors and 3-split screen)
and then the big single screen (using one projector) replaced that around
1966/67.  The first movie here in the single mode was "Grand Prix".
Then followed "Todd-AO" (70mm) format and Cinerama took a back seat, finally
fading right out.

Hi Bruce,

The "post-ww II" reference was a quote from the message I was asking about...not
my words! Heck, I feel old enough some mornings...I don't need to artificially
increase that factor!

Actually, I'm in the same boat, and yes, Cinerama was the term I had meant to
use, but had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder. That would have been 66/67 as
you say.

Grand Prix was the first one I saw on the big single screen as well. A memorable
experience. My brother (8 years older than I) took me to it. The age gap meant
we did almost nothing togeather, so this was pretty special. This particular
theatre used to go all out for the first couple of weeks for any film...i.e. the
usherettes for GP were all dressed in tight white driving coveralls, w/helmets
and goggles in the "up" position around the helmet. (For 2001:ASO they wore
these -short- silver mylar minidresses w/short capes of the same material and
high silver boots...8^o...) I bought the program and the LP and wore both right
out. The interest faded with the demise of slot cars. (1/24 Chaparall!). Then I
discovered GPL...now it's up every 2nd Sunday at 7AM for F1, Speedvision any
time anything historical is on, tweaking setups for the Ferrari, making covers
for tracks from sims I've bought just to get tracks...help!

Anyway, it's nice to see a trend towards theatres with big screens and luxury
seating again. Gives one a reason to go catch it on the big screen when it's
-BIG- and not in danger of being dwarfed by the neighbor's Home Entertainment
System w/THX/Dolby Surround...(read Cineplex).

Now all they have to do is a re-release of GP to celebrate...in THX/Dolby
Surround...8^)

Oh God.....you've just described a wonderful part of my errant youth, J.P.
:-)
I look at the Ebay auctions for such things as the 1/24th. Cox kits (of
which I owned many), the Monogram Lotus 38 and Dirt Track Midget and weep
when I see the prices that people are paying!!!!!  I don't think I'll ever
be the same again :-)

Yep...8^)...I never should have got rid of them. I had a series of the 1/24
Chaparrals (Cox, I think), including the one where the electric motor was swing
mounted so that torque and momentum would cause the motor to move up and down.
That was linked to the wing, which would then move into straight or tilted
position, depending on whether or not you were accelerating or decelerating for
downforce when you needed it. Hard to say if it was significant for handling,
but it sure looked cool.
