semi OT: new LCD monitor 20" or 2x19"?

I was looking at LCD monitors to replace my old crt and realised that while
the 19 inches models are very affordable, the 20 inches and up cost more
than double for only an extra inch. Since i have a 6800XT PCIe and it
supports two monitors, i was wondering if there was a way to use them in
racing sims. Having two 19 inches monitors side by side would make for a
kickass forward view.

So, is there a way to use them both for racing games?

Yes you can but two monitors does not make for a kickass forward view as
the join is straight down the middle of your view. Three monitors gets
over the issue as you have a forward and side views which work better
with the joins.

Also you will need to run a a pretty high resolution say 2048x768 which
your card may struggle with.

The only decent 2 output view I have seen for racing sims is with
projectors as the join can be reasonably seamless.

Widescreen be it 20" or 24" work pretty well for racing sims IMO. Width
is more important than height - you don't need to see a lot of the sky.

Cheers

Affordable19" widescreen monitors has just arrived in the market. You have
to look at the resoulution not only the size. The 20" 4:3 monitors are more
expensive because they are 1600x1200 while a 19" (and 17") 4:3 is 1280x1024.

I just bought a Dell 2005FPW Widescreen LCD and absolutely love it.  I
paid $396.00 about a month ago. (It's currently $423.20)  I mostly run
rFactor & GTL and have had no problems with ghosting, etc.  I was
surprised my system (P4 3.0, 2 gigs of RAM, ATI X800XT AGP 256mb
All-In-Wonder card) was able to run the 1680 X 1050 resolution with no
noticeable drop in FPS. I have most of the eye candy maxed as well.

What is also nice about this monitor is all the inputs.  DVI-D, VGA,
S-Video, composite, and 4 USB ports.   This allows me to use the DVI-D
for the PC and plug my DirecTV receiver into the S-Video. All I have to
do is hit the input select button on the front of the monitor.

It also has scaling options so you don't have to use interpolation if
your PC can't handle the 1680X1050 resolution.   IE, if you needed to
run 1024X768, on a 'normal' LCD, it would be distorted due to scaling.
On this monitor, you can use 1:1 mode where it will run in actual
1024X768 resolution in the center of the screen.  You will have either
black horizontal or vertical bars like you do when you watch a
widescreen on a 4:3 TV, but at least you don't have scaling distortion.

I replaced a 19in Viewsonic P95f+ and my only regret is that I didn't do
it sooner.

Just my .02.

I don't recomment two monitors at all for racing sims.  You're view upfront
is just messed up by the center monitor seperation, it doesn't feel right at
all as your view is always off-center a little.   Better to get a widescreen
monitor instead.  Or 3.

Hi Scott,

I know you've already answered it in the quote above, but I'm in the market
for a monitor and was interested in the description you gave. I've looked
around at various review sites and all list this monitor as having as 16ms
response time. Now I know that some manufacturers and sites use different
benchmarks to shave this statistic, but everything I've read so far has said
don't look at anything above 8ms for racing. So, really no problems...really
ok for racing?

Regards

Rick.

Rick,

This is the same monitor that Apple was selling, and one was listed at
12ms, and one was listed as 16ms..  so if you can figure that out for
me, let me know!   ;)

Honestly,  I've had absolutely no problem with ghosting or blurring.
GTL, rfactor, HL2, BF2, BF2:SF, Call of Duty 2, CivIV, CS:Source, etc.
They all look fantastic on it IMHO.

Now, there is some back light bleed through in the corners of the
screen, but you only notice that on a really dark screen.  For instance,
the only time I notice it is when the all black WindowsXP screen saver
kicks on.

Honestly, I want another one for my other PC.  I'm 100% satisfied with
the purchase so far.  No dead pixels, and I did pay a little extra for
an extended warranty, but that was just something I felt comfortable
doing since I've never owned an LCD up to this point other than a
notebook.

This monitor also allows you to rotate into portrait mode if you so
desire by rotating the whole screen.  I've used various devices on the
USB ports with no problems so far as well just as an FYI.

I'm not saying its the best LCD out there, I'm not saying that it's the
best color reproduction or the best brightness or anything as I believe
those are subjective.  What I'm comfortable saying is that I've had no
problems with ghosting, blurring, or tearing in any way, shape, or form.

So yes, I can recommend it without any reservations.  I did quite a bit
of research on this monitor prior to buying it over on RSC, Anandtech,
and a few other forums.  Not many complaints to be found and only a
couple of people commented on the back light issue, which I was
expecting but is much less  significant than I thought it might be.

So I'm now done sounding like a Dell commercial!

Interesting, although the compatibility list looks more suited for
nVidia cards as ATI cards seem limited to 2400x800 with this setup (3
screens of 800x600) which may be a bit low, plus SLI is supported but
not Crossfire.

http://www.matrox.com/graphics/offhome/support/th2go/compatibility.cfm

The concept though seems good to utilise standard video cards to achieve
3 monitor support.

Cheers

Has there been a change (driver/hardware) over the last year that now allows
for multimonitor *** on an *SLI* setup ? If not, then go single
widescreen monitor.

No, but the add on device TripleHead2Go from Matrox does exactly that -
takes a feed for a single monitor and splits it across 3 monitors *AND*
works with SLI.

Thanks, was just wondering whether nVidia got their act together :)
