Time to make some backups

by Dave Henri » Mon, 06 Jan 2003 14:01:11

I have on my desktop a folder called 'Racing Sims'  which hold all the
addons, mods, and tracks I've dloaded for the various sims.    Inside that
are subfolders for most of my current sims like F1 2k2, 2k2 and N2k2, and
GPL and SCGT etc.  When I looked at the properties for the main folder, it
said I had 3.5 gigs of stored material inside.  And thats with just a few
GPL tracks stored there.(I haven't been too agreesive picking those up,
since I haven't even mastered the original tracks.)
Anyhow, 3.5 gigs is a lot of stuff to leave sitting on my desktop.  Guess
I'll spend the next few days burning cds.  Nite all...

IMHO, you should have done that long ago... I do, as soon as I collect ~700MB
worth of downloads, they go to a CD-R. Currently, I've already 14 CD-R's full
of demos, add-ons, etc. for various games (and #15 is coming), another 14 of
various freeware/shareware programs downloaded form the 'Net (and yes, a 15th
should be coming in a month or so), and half a dozen containing pictures,
videos, MIDI and WAV files, etc. (Wait, I forgot another 4 containing anything
related to airplanes, cars and/or scale models).

Right now my "Racing Sims Downloads" folder has 3.92GB. I also have 18
cd's of downloads (not all full, of course). I guess I went a little
crazy when I got DSL!

Sounds to me like you need a faster CD burner, Dave. Even my old TEAC CDR55S

Jan.

dvd-ram is not better then dvd-rw :)  they cost more, and are not compatible
with most dvd-rom drives or players.

and if all you do is data backup, dvd+rw is better still.

Might want to consider a tape backup unit and set it up to do regular
backups.

Depends on the tape unit really.
Nice thing is you can automate the process to run at night due to the amount
of data a tape can hold over CDs.
