Today, for the second time, my crew failed to just splash and go and opted
to fill me up to 22 gallons which cost me the race.  Fortunately, I had
restarted a saved game and went on to restart from the previous save.  This
time when I pitted I asked for exactly how much gas I needed by using the <
key to lower the amount to 5 gallons of gas.  I'm a veteran to the Papyrus
NASCAR sims and in N2?NR1999 the splash and go was computed without any
input from the driver.  What am I missing from how this was handled
previously?

Nascar 3, about the fuel option, is somehow a mix between N1 and N2.  Back
in Nascar Racing 1 you had total control of the fuel in any condition, but
in N2 the crew chief had control on the fuel.

Now in N3, the crew chief always puts the best  number of fuel necessary to
finish the race, but if you want to put less gas in it, you can now (but you
can't get more fuel than how much you have in it).  It's much better
explained in the N3 manual, btw ;)

That doesn't answer his post as to why it filled the tank unnecessarily.

Hmm. I was wondering about that. Last night I ran a Busch race at
Darlington. My last pit was with ~20 laps to go. I called in for right sides
only and just figured the chief would throw in a half a tank or so. Nope. I
think the tires were done before all the gas was in. Full tank. Cost me a
couple of seconds, but all ended well. :))

It seems that any time you hit F9, for whatever reason, you're gonna get a full
tank unless after that you hit F3 and adjust the "fill to" level.  I've hit F9
just to check if I've been damaged, and always hear the crew chief say "we're
filling you up".  Best bet is always to use the F3 key and confirm you feul
level before you stop.

Same thing happens everytime with me.  I wonder if it has to do with the
length of race?  I usually race 50%.

The crewchiefs are a little dumb when it comes to calculate fuel load in
N2/NR99/N3.  They always fill up the tank about 15-20% too much on the
numbers of laps you have left in a race.  That's why it's changed in N3,
since customers wanted to have the control on that aspect.

You will always get a full tank unless you tell it otherwise.
