You will also find accidents in IRL that were alot smaller that there were
Injuries.
It is not a black and white deal.. some things are freak accidents,
somethings just have to have the perfect circumstances to cause a death or
on the other end of the spectrum, for a driver to escape uninjured.
You can not just compare two accidents
And there's only 7 or 8 IRL races while there are 40 nascar races a
year (ballpark figures)

Kenny Wallace walked away from a wall impact wreck in the Busch race
at Nazareth today that looked way worse than Earnhardts crash.
He was wearing some type of neck support, although it wasn't a HANS
device. Very similar setup though, with straps that clip onto the
helmet. It actually looked less obtrusive since it didn't appear to
have the big "C" collar common to the HANS.
I think Wallace said one of the NASCAR guys came up with this device.
Not to take this completely off on a tangent, but I don't feel it's
the cars that are dangerous anyway, it's the tracks.
Concrete walls make horrible impact barriers.
