Tony,

I do have access to the alt.binaries newsgroups, and adding
rec.autos.simulators.binaries frightens me a little.  While
alt.binaries.simulators.autos has a lot of "legal" traffic on it, it
is also a haven for pirating.

Everyone --

Just to update you on the official RFD procedure...

After a lag time of over two weeks, the first RFD made it through
news.announce.newgroups automated posting cycle (finally!!) and is now
up for discussion on news.groups as well.

We now have a mentor for the RFD in the person of Afzal Ballim, a
rec.autos.simulators lurker and one of the original proponents for
rec.autos.simulators.  He has made several suggestions which I have
incorporated into a new RFD that has just gone out.

The second RFD adds rec.autos.simulators.misc and
rec.autos.simulators.binaries.  If I did the RFD right, traffic
existing in rec.autos.simulators would go into the .misc group by
default.  The logic for rec.autos.simulators.binaries is the fact that
alt.* are not widely distributed.  However, rec.* groups are nearly
universally distributed and its inclusion would fit right in with the
proposed reorganization.

It's probably going to be another couple of weeks before the 2nd RFD
is posted.  Until then, please limit your discussion to the existing
RFD on news.groups so that this one doesn't get overloaded.

Thanks,
tj

Tony,

Just wanted to say that I am glad that as long as the actual process
is being initiated, at least it is being done correctly, and we
are not being railroaded. I am glad you have decided to stay with this.

Looking forward to the vote and then getting on with enjoying this
newsgroup again, whichever way things turn out, at least it will have been
done fairly, and the newsgroup will have what the majority wants.

Also I like the new organization of the groups compared to just a nascar
group, especially the new r.a.s.binaries group since up until now, many of
us (me included) have not been able to get the binary group since it is
under the alt.* hierarchy. Again, your RFD shows a lot more thought.

Cheers.

I've also noticed the piracy and threats/requests for piracy on ABSA.
Perhaps the RASB could be moderated and all posts "approved" before
distribution?  Is this possible???  I don't know much about how newsgroups
work especially along those lines, and no I wouldn't be able to do the
moderating ;-).

shooting through ***space:

It is possible, but David Lawrence (the USENET guru who presides over
newsgroup selection) said that it would be highly unlikely that an RFD
with a "big-8" binaries group (meaning part of the rec.* hierarchy)
would pass, even with a majority vote, for the interests of
copyrights.  The second RFD has been overhauled to drop the binaries
group.
