SB16 sound in GP1 (why not?) problem

I have a very low (and lousy but that could just be the program itself,
it sounds like a Renault V10, yuck!) sound volume while playing WC1.
I set it up with the SB16 option as I do have a SB card (a 64 bit
though). The sb16 test, tests just fine, but upon starting the
simulation the volume is hardly audible. Has anybody experienced
this problem? Solutions (of the practical kind that is)?!
