Solar Effects in N2003 = HUGE fps hit?

by JRIBS3 » Wed, 12 Feb 2003 07:30:03

Anyone else having this problem with the solar effects on?  I have all of
the graphics about in the middle as far as between full on and off running
with a P4 2.0-GeForce 3 TI 500 (32.20 detonator)-512 Ram-Soundblaster Live.
With solar effects on I go from approx. 35-40 fps to a screeching 10-12!  It
seems as the track almost stops.  I was thinking I would be able to run the
game with more of the graphics turned on.  I will try to list what I can
remember as my settings:
Draw Ahead=60
world detail=medium
car detail=high
cars drawn ahead=20
drawn behind=4
mirror detail=medium
trackside objects=all
dust, dirt debris
windshield buildup
smoke and skidmarks
track lighting effects
With a full field I never drop below 40 fps and sometimes when the field is
spread out I hit as high as 90 but if I enable the cool solar effects it
just kills it.  Do I need a faster processor or video card?  Or is neither
one going to help?  Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's a documented issue.  It happens when you have AA enabled and is
much worse running OpenGL.  Either turn off AA or the Solar Effect for now.

I am running Open GL and I have 2X AA turned on.  How do I get it to not
look all jagged if I turn AA off?

Run your resolution at 1600X1200, assuming you have a monitor that will do
it.  Won't completely remove jaggies but it's about the only way to try
without antialiasing.  If your monitor won't run a resolution that high,
then either deal with the jaggies, or keep solar effects turned off.  At
least until the first patch.

As Kevin says, either up your resolution or turn off the solar effect for
now.  I've chosen the latter, myself.
