MSFF positioning

In my continuing search for excuses as to why I'm ***at GPL, I thought I'd
try the 'my MSFF position is holding me back' routine.

So, currently, the wheel is attached to a desk **cm off the floor and the
seat of my not-adjustable, cheap-and-*** swivel chair is **cm off the
floor.  Then there's the pedals; a plastic floppy disk box attempts to
create a barrier between the pedals and the v. low shelf of the
aforementioned desk unit, resulting mostly in feet at a 45% angle or left
foot trying to keep the pedal base still.

Ho hum.  Needless to say, a new desk and chair are on the cards (note: this
is due to an imminent house move and not just GPL requirements...wifey
wouldn't allow that ;-)), so can I get some suggestions or details of other
people's setups?

On the subject of slipping pedals; I've thought about that grippy ***
stuff you can get from car accessory shops (stops your coins falling off
your dashboard, apparently).  The idea is you cut a piece of *** to the
required size and hey presto!, things stay put.  I wonder if it'll keep the
pedal unit secured to the floor?

Oh and one more thing: squeaky throttle pedal.  I know this has been
discussed on ras before but I can't remember the details...essentially, will
a squirt of WD40 harm the pedal mechanism?

Oops! That should read "the wheel is attached to a desk 76cm off the floor"
and "cheap-and-*** swivel chair is 40cm off the floor"

Sorry!
