That's because Germany isn't called Germany in German. It's Deutschland -
land of the Deutsch. The Brits considered us Hollanders to be some sort of
Deutschers too, living in the same region (from their point of view) and
speaking the same kind of language. Deutsch - Dutch... it's just an
historical mistake. It even dates from times when neither the Netherlands
nor Germany existed as countries.

Maybe you can explain this other great Dutch conundrum for me too. Why do
people say "going dutch" when they go on a date and each pays their own way?
To me it implies that the Dutch are cheap, but I have never seen evidence of
that. You probably don't know the answer to that because they don't say it
there, but over here people occasionally say it.
