SCGT-Two Questions

by Paul Jage » Wed, 05 May 1999 04:00:00

I have played the demo of SCGT and am awaiting the games release here in the
UK on Friday, but I have a couple of questions.
1) what is the speed compensation option?
2)  I am playing the game using 3dfx (D3D is very dark coloured, even
playing around with the gamma slider) but notice that when watching a replay
from 'trackside' the cars are drawn from low to high resolution as they pass
the camera but this is done in a very 'jerky' way, rather than a smooth
transition. Is this the case with the retail game (for information, I have a
P450 with 2xDiamond 3dfx cards and 256mb ram).
Thanks

Unfortunately I've noticed the same thing about the cars.  Quite annoying
actually...you can see it happening during a race too.  I have a similar
system P400 with 2xDiamond Voodoo2 12 megs, but only 64megs of ram

Speed compesation speeds up the top speed of the cars behind the leader so that
the race is closer.  Very handy when you've souped up your car like hell (me!
I love hitting about 240 mph at Hockenheim!!!)  Good luck!  And as soon as you
get the full version, download the Advanced Options Editor.  It gets rid of the
two foot deep seeming grass and it makes the car handling a touch more
realistic.  Also, it makes the rain slicker.

The speed compensationa allows the game to drop framerates rather than make the
"real" time longer than the lap time as happens with Nascar Revolution. Thats
what I can gather anyway.

I reckon the frame rate for the game is well below what it should be. I have no
problems running GPL, Viper, Superbikes, Toca 2 and dozens of other games at
their respective full res and graphics options. However with SCGT I get jerky
graphics. I have a Xeon 500MHZ, 2 X Voodoo 2 (STB) and a BETA TNT 2.

I don't believe that is true. I am almost certain that speed compensation
speeds up the AI if you are too far ahaed or slows them down if you are too
far behind.

Read the manual... That's not what this option does. What is does is the
following: it helps slower cars get "speed boosts" in order to stay
competitive, kinda like an arcade racer. When you get in front, the
other cars you passed go a bit faster.

Dumbass.
Speed Compensation is whether or not you want the AI to be able to "catch up
to the pack" when it gets behind.

Probably. I havent read the manual yet and there is nothing about it in the
readme. Whilst I was having troubles with the frame rate I was changing things
around and I assu'med this is what this setting was doing. Oh well, wrong again
for the millionth time this week....

Sorry for not being correct all of the time. I never claimed this to be the
actual answer, just what I could gather from playing the game for many hours
without reading the manual.

Dumbass......no.......mistaken......yes.....

I hit the delete key on my keyboard. Will this make him vanish or am I
being a dumbass again?

Mind you, I was rather rude to another poster on this newsgroup so I
can't really complain about this little flame.

I actually thought this would be a very useful option (for beginners and
pros alike) until I got to see the extremely unrealistic side of it...

I had set the Speed Compensation to "Low" and was putting out good lap
times consistently at Sardian Park and slightly pulling away from the
pack.

The guy occupying the last place had to make an extra pitstop because of
some racing incident which allowed me to catch and lap him. From the
mirror I could see him pulling away from the pits. To my surprise, this
backmarker had soon caught me and zoomed past my BMW like his wife was in
labor or something. He probably had fresh tires but mine weren't bad
either (94% IIRC). He was simply too fast - phenomenally so.

What made the situation ridiculous was that at the same time I was
pulling away from number 2 and number 12 was now pulling away from me,
faster than anything I had seen during the race so far. Needless to say,
I felt quite overwhelmed by this "divine intervention". Having fought
hard for the 1st place it didn't particularly add to the feeling of
accomplishment to see a backmarker leave me like standing.

And btw, another minor thing that doesn't affect the racing itself but
which somehow annoys the hell outta me is how the AI cars seem to
continue fighting for position when the race has ended. It's like they're
simply using a slightly tuned down version of the racing algorithm.

Played with the setting as well and its effects are comical with the faster
carson tracks like Hockenheim. Lucky the AI times don;t count towards the lap
records!
