Two things were cleared after wathing F1 today in Germany.

First. Hill said, that he heard Berger's engine sounding bad, just
before it expired.
Well, they CAN hear the other cars....
Bad for Berger, but Hill realy deserves the championship :-)))
Second. When braking from 340 kmh after the straight, the braking point
is about 90 meters before the corner. Impressive :-) (According to
Eurosport)

In an interview, Villeneuve was describing his (and possibly all other
driver's too) outbraking technique of keeping his eyes on the entry of
the corner and waiting for the other car to start downshifting before he
started braking. They can definitely hear each other's engine, maybe not
as clearly as their own but clearly enough to hear down and upshifts.

Let's be clear on this, he said he heard _an_ engine sounding bad,
and he was glad when it turned out to be Berger's and not his -
I still think you can't hear other engines in normal circumstances,
but I suppose that the change in Berger's engine note was detectable
because it got louder?

                - Craig ("Strobe").

Yeah as Hill said in his post race interview that he could hear
Gerhards engine sounding a bit off.

I assume that since Hill is right behind Berger's car, the exhaust
is pointing straight at him and Hill's is pointing away from him. I
guess you would hear it. For simulations... I think we should hear
the engines though faintly. Since there is no way to look around
you, hearing is the second way of knowing someone is there. I
also wish the mirrors were like in ICR2. It not as real but like I
said.. in a simulation, its hard to look around or judge where other
cars are. It still a great sim but it good be the best for years with
a little patch for 3D card support and some bug fixes. I want to
see my wheels!

Actually three: Pedro Diniz is becoming a good F1 driver.

According to Brundle, i think :-)

Hill also said - he didn't know if it was his engine or Bergers until
Berger slowed down.

I don't think we can define what the drivers actually hear until one
of them tells us. I have read about several drivers that are
interested in computers, and it would be great for us if they could
provide some answers here.

Although at first he was not sure, Hill did realise it was Berger's
engine that was spluttering, as his sounded fine. That is why he took a
different line to Berger down the straight, so that when it blew he
didn't get covered in oil.
