GPL and the Fantastic 40k

As an added note Turn 1 Grand Prix Legends has added 9 new images to its photo gallery and a how-to the Hotbar browser skins.

It seems sad that Grand Prix Legends only sold 40,000 copies! Here we have the best racing simulation yet created and only a paltry 40k turnout at the start/finish line. Seems like the current state of CART/IRL with all those flame breathing monsters and nobody will come to the party to watch! Would Papy/Sierra be more or less successful if it released GPL today? Better hardware, increased interest in online racing would have helped the numbers for GPL. Also a better more stable connection for online, seems that N3 and Nascar Legends have less problems than GPL with online racing.

I think that even though Grand Prix Legends is a simulation about
cars of the past, in the future it will be viewed as a classic online
racer that was well ahead of it's time. I think it broke the ice for
online racing and although there were some challenges  early on, just
look how great it is now.  I know that much of this has to do with the
care and passion that a few people have put into it since it's release,
and I thank them for it. If there were no GPL what would the state of
online racing be?

40,000 is often quoted as a sales figure for GPL, but how many
exasperated users returned one of those?  And how many more gave up in
complete frustration?
Actually gpl users?  Probably the better part of a few hundred.
