Using redundant game port on onboard sound

Using redundant game port on onboard sound

Apologies in advance as this isn't exaclty sim related (though tenuously
could be :)), but as simming involves gameport devices generally I
thought this would be a good place to ask. So...

My motherboard has onboard sound which I don't use, and that along with
my onboard gameport is disabled.  However,  I wondered how windows (any
version) would behave if I enabled the gameport and plugged a 2nd device
into it.  Has anyone tried this to see if it's possible to use 2
separate devices at the same time to play games.  Always a bummer when
one has to use the keyboard.  Imagine being able to use two separate
analogue controllers.  Any chance?

You should not have a problem at all

Most games these days detect/allow multiple game controllers

You might not have any trouble, but my experience points to you could have
all kinds of troubles pop up, LOL.  Some cards will fight each other, and
enableing the sound's game port might be tied to the "built-in" sound card.
if it wasnt though, (and after all the port uses generig Windows drivers in
99% of the time I watch them install...  laslty, depends mostly on SW&
developers, because NR(#2) had no chance of seeing 2 controllers IIRC...
but NR2003 see's all 3 of mine.

If your smart though, you would get USB devices, instead.  IMHO they tax the
cpu less, XP and higher dont even support gameports for diddley...

FYI I have a USB MS FF wheel, GPL usb shifter, and a regular usb joystic
plugged in at times, mostly when I have the kids around... or playing COD,
or BF1942...  though for sake of eliminating some potential points of
failure, I remove all (cept the wheel-pedals set of course) before I go
racing my leagues...

Cheers to you and Cliff for the info.  Have my wheel plugged in via USB
and also wondered if plugging in other *** devices my cause that to
go***up.  Looks like there's a good chance all should be ok.  Thanks.

At the risk of showing my stupidity can someone tell my more about XP not
supporting gameports...
I have not heard this before and have only in the last few weeks installed
xp, my only wheel
is a Hyperstim which I have just plugged in but it no longer recognises 3
axis I have E-mailed the makers
and am waiting for a reply, just wondering if you could shed some more light
on this for me.

Thanks
Craig

I use XP Pro, nforce2 mboard, AthlonXP 2100.  I have the onboard sound
card and its gameport enabled.  At the same time, I have a Hercules
Fortissimo II pci sound card and its gameport enabled.  I can use both
gameports simultaneously as well as usb device.  No problem.  You
should be fine.
