There is a big difference in performance if you go from digital sound to
fm sound. Try 'nascar -f'

Agreed. On my 486/66, I can run VGA with most of the features turned on,
when I run with FM sound. (Ooooo, to run SVGA with ANY features turned
on...!)
And you know what? I actually LIKE the sounds more in FM mode. :)

Dunno... but my 486 is as fast as a friend's Pentium because I have a
Gravis Ultrasound and he has a Soundblaster. My sound is better and I
have the maximum "heard" setting. He had to trim the setting.
Ultrasound's use very little CPU even with full digital sound and it's
better than the 8-bit/16-bit mono/stereo sound from a SB.
So anyway, it's perfectly reasonable that switching to FM sound would speed
up a Soundblaster equipped system.
Try: nascar -f -h
