DTR - More fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Has there ever been such a thing as a barrel full of actual monkeys?  Somehow I
doubt it.

But I bought DTR today, just finished my first season, stock.  Had a blast.
Every track is different and deserves 1000 laps of it's own just to find that
sweet groove that they all have.  Basically, I love this game.  And I've only
driven on maybe 8 tracks so far.

To compare to the yardstick of PC racing, GPL, I'd have to say that GPL
provides a better simulation of a 4 wheeled vehicle.  But, DTR is more fun.
You can go out there and mix it up and race, even against the computer.

Where GPL is frustrating, DTR is fun.  I don't think I've ever finished
anything but dead last against the AI in GPL.  But in DTR, I started a season
at 85% AI and finished first in a stock series, but not by much.  So I'll keep
it set at 85 and see how I do in the next series.  And then at some point I can
tweak it to 90%, 95%, 100%.  Probably a year from now I'll be racing the
modifieds at 100% and hopefully finishing in the top 2 or 3, or maybe even
first at that point.  More fun than finishing dead last again in GPL.

So anyway.  I like DTR, go buy it, it's cheap.  Even in Canada, only 25$ up
here.

I've wondered that as well.  And if there was, what would be so fun about
it?

Monkeys are just fun period. Monkey's dressed as the Three Stooges. Well
that is comic nirvana....

DTR - More fun than a barrel of monkeys.

If I remember the story correctly, many years ago, circa 18th century, there
was a ship carrying cargo from one place to another on a long voyage.  This
ship had barrels of food stuffs.  Somehow, some monkeys got into a barrel to
feed and were trapped in the barrel and got loaded onto the ship.  At some
point at sea, a crew member found the occupied barrel, released the monkeys,
and the  monkeys ran amuck on the ship for days, swinging from the masts and
sails and such, providing entertainment for the otherwise bored sailors.
Sorry, I don't remember the details.

This is the main problem I had with the demo of DTR. I was running the
super modifies at 95% after just 3 days, and finishing in the top 3 almost
all the time. So if a mid packer like me in gpl can be this competitive in 3
days. Just how long will DTR hold my interest?
So at this point I opted not to buy DTR.

1. The demo included 3 tracks. The full game has 30, and I guarantee
that you will not do equally well in all of them.

2. The full game includes the celebrated championship mode which is more
than simply racing. It forces you to preserve your car during racing
because, after all, you only have a certain amount of money for repairs,
and thus it changes the way you race. All of a sudden, it's not so easy
to finish in the top 3.

3. Wetness in the championship is not something that you just set to 50%
and enjoy. You're given a wetness and your job is to handle it, whatever
its percentage. Very dry and very wet tracks are much harder than you
think.

4. Once you have conquered your off-line foes there's always the on-line
experience. Let's see how you do against the best DTR racers.

At $20, I hope you reconsider.

I certainly enjoyed the demo and had some fun online with it - best
online code without doubt - but I don't see this game keeping me
transfixed as with some other title I can't quite think of at the
moment.  To me it would be the type of game where I would load it up,
play it for half an hour or so going round in a circle until I got
dizzy, or go online for a couple of hours for a bit of fun, but I'm not
sure that I would be spending every last second trying to work out how
to get an extra 10th here or there.  Fun, but lacking in the longevity
department methinks.
