Dirt Track Racing replays?

by John Bodi » Sun, 29 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Okay, this is to all of you who keep coming up with new info about Dirt
Track Racing:

Tell me this -- will Dirt Track Racing include a replay option?  This is a
feature that was sorely missing in Powerslide, and I think that DTR really
needs this feature to be successful.  Replay data can be recorded in a
tight, compact manner -- Viper Racing taught us this, with replays that are
actual re-creations of the race using saved positioning data, rather than
replays that are just stored graphics dumps of the action (can't remember
the name for this replay methodology -- "re-simulated" versus "recorded,"
perhaps?).

At any rate, this is one thing I *REALLY* want to see in Dirt Track Racing.
Did I mention in-cockpit views, too?  <G>

WOW -- Ratbag replied to ME directly on this!  I guess they ARE paying
attention to what goes on here!

At any rate, their response came from Richard Harrison, Technical Director
Ratbag Pty Ltd.  Richard indicated that he agrees that a replay option would
be ideal, and he also remarked about how cool it would be to be able to
trade replays of hot laps with others.  He went on to say:

"We are on a pretty tight schedule with a lot of core game stuff yet to go
in.  Like Powerslide DTR has a lot of stuff to save so we really need to get
some compression happening on this (replay) data."

Sounds to me like they're planning on including a replay option, and that
they're already working on it.  Hopefully they'll be able to get this nailed
down in time to include it in the final version when it ships.

The best part of all this, though, is that this indicates that these guys
ARE paying attention to what we -- the sim racing nutcases -- want in a sim.
I didnt' say anything about trading replays of hot laps with others in my
post, but Ratbag has already figured out that this is an ideal use of a
replay function.

Bring on Dirt Track Racing -- the anticipation is killing me!!

Damnit!!!  Damnit!!!  I can't believe it....  I have been talking up this
game for so long and they respond to John first....   well crap...
What about the questions I had? What about my constant claim of wood
everytime I see a new screen shot? Huh? What about that.... TELL ME!!!
Just because he asked "serious" questions... and used "proper" english and
didn't use "profanity" I tell you... some people.....

Dirt Track Racing replays?

Oops -- I seem to have mis-interpreted Ratbag's comments about a replay
option in DTR.  I interpreted Richard Harrison's comments to mean that they
were already working on the programming to include a replay function in DTR,
but that's apparently not the case.  They hope to be able to include a
replay function, but this is not a definite at this point.  Richard went on
to say:

"I just wanted to confirm that we have not begun work on this and it is not
a definite.  My musings about compression were based purely upon the
problems we saw trying to fit it into Powerslide, not upon experience
with DTR."

Let's hope they manage to get this done -- it would be great to have a
replay function to watch those inevitable last-lap Earnhart-type pileups in
DTR! <G>

I still have to say that it's great to see that Ratbag is paying attention
to what goes on here -- it just confirms to me that they are plugged-in to
what sim racers are talking about, which means a better product for us in
the end.
