The car of Dale Earnhardt (3) crashes in the final lap with Ken Schrader.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR racing's most popular driver,
died Sunday from injuries suffered in a last-lap crash in the Daytona 500.
Fox TV's Dan Bell said that Fox analyst Darrell Waltrip's doctor was
notified of Earnhardt's death via a phone call from nearby Halifax Hospital,
to which Earnhardt, 49, had been driven.
Earnhardt's famed No. 3 car spun out and crashed into the outside wall
moments before Michael Waltrip, whose car is owned by Earnhardt, won his
first Daytona 500 after 462 winless Winston Cup races.
Bell said technicians used the "jaws of life" to extracate Earnhardt from
his car. Ken Schrader also was involved in the crash but walked away
unharmed.
A seven-time Winston Cup champion, Earnhardt was sixth all-time with 76 wins
in 675 races.
