I know that strictly speaking this article shouldn't be here, but I am
at my wit's end and I don't know where else to turn.
My CD-ROM is acting up. I have recently upgraded my PC from a Pentium
133MHz to a Pentium 200MHz. I have had a new CPU and a new motherboard,
but everything else has remained the same. Prior to the change my CD-ROM
worked fine, but now it doesn't.
The CD-ROM will read data no problem, and it will play audio CDs no
problem. My games continue to work normally, except for any video
sequences. When playing a video sequence, the sound is distorted and
choppy, with either a weird rhythmic 'thrumming' or a staccato 'ticking'
going on in the background. It sounds awful, and sometimes the system
seems to slow down when this happens (especially in The Need for Speed).
So far, I have tried the following to no avail -
1. With & without SMARTDRV
2. With & without MSCDEX buffers
3. Upgrading to latest CD-ROM drivers & MSCDEX
4. Fiddled with all BIOS and CMOS settings
5. Tried secondary, tertiary and quaternary IDE channels
6. Tried Master & Slave mode on all above channels
7. Tried connecting to both m/b and soundcard IDE ports
8. Tried alternative soundcard settings
None of this has helped. If anyone out there can suggest anything else I
might try, I would be most grateful. For reference, my system is as
follows -
Intel Pentium 200MHz CPU, 512kb PB cache, 24Mb EDO RAM, Triton M/B
Tseng ET4000/W32p Video Card
SoundBlaster AWE32 Sound Card
Mitsumi Quad Speed E-IDE CD-ROM
DOS 6.2, Windows 3.11
Thanks in advance for any help.
