Windows 98 Modem Init Strings

by Doug Appleyar » Thu, 11 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I have had some success with modifying my modem
init string for on-line games (Nascar 3) as discussed
in recent posts.  (Short summary:  modify your
modem init string to &F1&K0&M0&U10&N13).

The modem init string is apparently a global.
So if I save it in Dial-Up Networking under
"On-Line ***", it also saves it for my
ISP dial-up, and my work dial-up.  I don't
like this, since I want higher speeds and
error correction, etc. when dialing in to work.

The recent postings said to create a new modem
which is really just the same as your first
modem, but with a different init string.
But in Windows 98 I can't do this, because
when I try to define a new modem, it won't
let me point it to COM2.  COM2's got the first
modem, so apparently Win98 "smarts" prevent
me from using this for a second (albeit the same)
modem.

Anyone know a way around this?  (I know - Win95 ;-)
My current workaround is to manually modify the
init string prior to every racing session.
Would love for this to be autopilot.

Thanks

Win 98 lets me do this. Go Control Panel | Modems | Add. Make sure 'Don't
detect my modem, I will select it from a list' is checked | Next | select
the make and model of you modem | Next | highlight Com2 | Next | Finish and
it should all work fine. It will add a modem called <your modem name> #2.
Then adjust your DUN settings to tell each done to use the 'different'
modems.

This is not Win98 SE. I don't know if that affects things.

Hope this helps
