Ubisoft F1 Problem

Merry Xmas fellow racers.
I'm having major problems getting this sim to run on my system, and was
hoping someone could help me.
My system was working fine before i installed F1 Racing Simulation. The game
freezes at the first intro screen. I'm fairly sure it's a DirectX problem,
as i can no longer access the DXSetup routine to check if my drivers are
certified, as this causes freezing too. I couldn't fix it, so i formatted
the h/d and reinstalled W95 and DirectX 5.0.... Everything again worked
perfectly until....you guessed it....i reinstalled F1. I've emailed Ubisoft,
but this being Xmas and all, i figured i might get a quicker fix at ras.
My system configuration is :
Pentium 233mmx
Gigabyte TX m/b
32mb sdram
Diamond Monster3d v/card - driver version m3d109
Creative Pacific 3dBlaster v/card - driver version 3.04 and latest bios
update
Awe32 s/card
24x cdrom
DirectX 5.0

Any suggestions are appreciated.
Phil

I'm  not 100% sure I understand your problem, but will offer some
advice.  (does it freeze during the install, or when you try to run
the game?)   First make sure you have at least 50 megs free on the
drive you are installing F1RS to.  (50 megs free after it is
installed)  Also, make sure the drive that your Win95 swap file is on
has at least 50 megs free, (maybe even 100).  If by chance you have a
Diamond Monster Sound, set that to safe mode.

Phil,
you don't by chance run Internet Explorer 4 do you? I've seen so many
problems lately with that darn thing that I've started just reformating
harddrives for my clients. I don't have time to waste on code that
causes so many problems. If you do have IE4, I'd bet it's some buried
conflict and it is for all intents and purposes impossible to remove.
Reformat and reload Win95 _without_ the IE4 options enabled.
Good luck, all the best, Mike Davis

I'm having a problem running the F1RS english demo. I can disconnect my
joystick from the game port (I have a CH Gamecard Pro)and the game runs
fine with keyboard control. However, if I leave my joystick connected,
the program crashes with an invalid page fault.

Can anyone help? Is this a problem with my game card or a DirectX5
problem? The joystick calibrates in Win95, and works in other games
(Tomb Raider II, MS CPR).

Thanks for your help, but i have Internet Explorer 4 on my wife's computer,
so that wasn't the problem. I had a conflict between drivers for my 3dfx and
rendition card, and direct x5. I tried a few things, swapping the slots the
cards were in and restoring the old drivers under direct x5 - and got F1RS
going that way.
We were having problems with IE4 soon after installation, random registry
errors, but after swapping out most of the hardware, it turned out to be 4
edo memory simms that weren't compatible with each other when pushed to the
limit (as the active desktop tends to do). I kindly donated my edo, and got
some sdram.<g>
I agree with your comments on reformatting after software problems with IE4,
it seems impossible to uninstall it successfully and so many other
applications have trouble with it as well, I read that even Office 97 won't
run after IE4 is uninstalled because they share so many system files. A lot
of people will disagree with this, and call it laziness, but the frustrating
hours you spend trying to find exactly what's causing you the problem is
sometimes better spent formatting and reinstalling software imo. The active
desktop seems to be the main cause of a lot of grief for people, and i know
people who are finding hardware problems they didn't know they had before,
as a result of installing IE4.
Creative seem to be releasing new drivers for the 3dblaster every
couple of months, they always say that they are compatible with dx5 but I
always seem to fix problems by running the old rendition drivers instead.
But with F1RS flying on my rig and N2-3dfx imminent, my 3db's days may be
numbered.<g>
