To the best of my knowledge that would be the "Task Scheduler".

You are thinking of  "MSTask.exe".

I believe mmtask.tsk is "multi-media task" and is an extension used by Game
Commander MX to allow dual voice capabilities, i.e. the ability to toggle
between voice commands and over-net comms such as Battle Commander.

It is part of the Multi-Media subsystem.  It appears to be the bit
that fails when you have the wrong video drivers, and try to play an
AVI / WAV file.

It is a microsoft file, and has been around since 3.x

correct... right-click -> Properties

Multimedia background task support module
Copyright Microsoft Corp. 1981-1996

Then at support.microsoft.com we see it's included with Windows 98 (also is
part of my W2K install):

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/4/36.ASP

I can't find a description of what it does in my MS developer documentation
but it seems to be an essential Windows file (it's part of every MS OS
distribution).

Yes, the MMTask you see is loaded by the driver that's part of GCMX. Until
you start up GCMX, the MMTask doesn't use any CPU cycles (it's just a data
structure) but Windows keeps it loaded as long as the driver is loaded.

Why is mmtask.tsk loading even though I don't have game commander?

I figured it was "MultiMediaTask", but I don't have any MS stuff other than
windows itself loading at startup.
