It is a microsoft file, and has been around since 3.x
correct... right-click -> Properties

part of my W2K install):

I can't find a description of what it does in my MS developer documentation
but it seems to be an essential Windows file (it's part of every MS OS
distribution).

Right. I see mmtask is a multimedia file so maybe it's something to do
with media player.
