CPU to Home Stereo part 2 - mono sound

by Brian Fo » Mon, 24 Jan 2000 04:00:00

After several hours of rearranging and getting the upstairs stereo into the
computer room, I seem to have mono sound.  I bought a mini-jack to rca cord,
but it wasn't long enough, so I dug out a mini-jack extension cord to get me
the extra few feet to the stereo.  I've tried all the surround settings on
the stereo, turned surround off, tried plugging the computer into the tv,
vcr, and cd jacks in the stereo, all the same.  In Liveware I've tried 2
speakers, 4 speakers, and Livesurround, still mono.  The sound is rich, and
much deeper than the little yamaha subwoofer/tweeter combo that I was using
(obviously, hehe), but at least it was in stereo before.  Any other ideas as
to what to try?  The left channel plays loud out of both speakers, the right
channel is muffled in both speakers.  I'm lost, and there's no way I'm
digging the living room stereo out to try it up here, hehe.

If you've not used your amp., for a while it could be that, I did the same
with an old amp, and one side would'nt work and when they did the distortion
and cracklin' was awful....you might try cleaning up your volume and balance
controls..I was told once that dust under the knobs can effect 'em.
Anyway in 'de end...got me a new amp..
Unless you have heard GPL, SCGT and RC 2000 though a decent amp and
speakers.. you've never lived...(loud of course..)

Sounds obvious, but did you get a *STEREO* mini-jack (1/8" phone plug) to
two RCA connectors?  Look at the silver part.  If there are only two obvious
'sections' on the plug (tip and barrel) , it's mono.  If the barrel has a
second separate ring before the tip, it's stereo.  Ditto for the extension.

I'm not making the assumption you don't know what you are doing, but I have
had plenty of frustrating hours of troubleshooting caused by things as
simple as this.

Hehe, ya got me.  I was at Best Buy staring at the massive wall of wires,
and I just grabbed the first mini to rca cable I saw.  Heck, why would
anyone want to listen to mono sound????? hehehe, works great now.
Unfortunately I will now have to reinstall every game I have purchased in
the last 5 or 6 years just to see how it sounds=)  Already tried GPL, sounds
great!!  Thanks.

Oops, I don't think I mentioned this in my other message.  I guess *I* assumed
that he would be using a stereo 1/8 plug.  Sorry, Brian.
