Motor Racing Books - Advice wanted

by Peter Hoope » Thu, 24 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hi everyone,
Just after a little advice on what are some decent books on the subject of
motor racing that I could pick up somewhere. Just come across these on
Amazon:-

'Inside Racing : A Season With the Pacwest Cart Indy Car Team'
'Inside Racing Technology : Discussions of Racing Technical Topics'

and they both sound like a good read.. anybody have any views on them??

I am particularly interested in any books on the car setups, etc (already
have Tune to Win and Drive to Win) and would appreciate any advice you can
offer.

Cheers

Besides the Carroll Smith books you mentioned, I like
this one also for setups. He has interesting slants on
the topic:

How to Make Your Car Handle, Fred Puhn, HPBooks
(The Berkley Publishing Group), N.Y. N.Y., 1981.
ISBN 0-912656-46-8

I've been reviewing this book again recently for the
finite wing modeling we are doing for SCCA Trans-AM
and am more and more impressed with the breadth
of the coverage (with focus still firmly on motorsports)

New Directions in Race Car Aerodynamics,
Designing for Speed, Joseph Katz, Robert Bentley, Inc.
Automotive Publishers,Cambridge, MA  ISBN 0-8376-0142-8

Another interesting aero survey book is:

Competition Car Downforce, A Practical Guide,
Simon McBeath, G.T.Foulis & Company, Haynes Publishing,
Sparkford, Nr Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 7JJ, Newbury Park,
CA, 1998. ISBN 0-85429-977-7.

And of course:

Ref 6-80: Race Car Engineering and Mechanics, Paul Van Valkenburg,
Published by author: Box 3611 Seal Beach, CA 90740, 1992.
(or HP Books, NY, NY. )  ISBN 0-9617425-0-X

and

"Race Car Vehicle Dynamics," W.F. Milliken and D.L. Milliken,
SAE, 1995. ISBN-1-56091-526-9

Offtopic a bit (although the book does have some discussion of dynamics
and car setup,  that isn't the main focus), is an interesting new book:

The Successful Race Car Driver, A Career Development Handbook,
Robert Metcalf, SAE, Warrendale, PA, 1999. ISBN 0-7680-0497-7,
SAE Order Number R-254    htp://www.sae.org

I like it because (as in Drive to Win) it covers all the other things
a professional raceer needs to be on top of besides the driving.

Well this book I stumpled across called "Technology of the Modern F1 car" has
some facinating insight into what makes those things tick.  Small book but
covers the whole car pretty well brushing on the key points.  And its easy
enough for even a duffer like me to understand.

They're pretty good, the same guy publishes a TV guide of just motorsports.  I
couldn't live without it.  http://insideracingtechnology.com

The Pacwest book gets a little ponderous at times, but it's still pretty good.
He documents each practice session in detail, including minor adjustments in
ride height, etc.

The technology book is mostly about CART, but applies to any form of racing.
In depth explanation of shock valving, and a chapter about the design and
construction of Swift's new wind tunnel.
