Besides the Carroll Smith books you mentioned, I like
this one also for setups. He has interesting slants on
the topic:
How to Make Your Car Handle, Fred Puhn, HPBooks
(The Berkley Publishing Group), N.Y. N.Y., 1981.
ISBN 0-912656-46-8
I've been reviewing this book again recently for the
finite wing modeling we are doing for SCCA Trans-AM
and am more and more impressed with the breadth
of the coverage (with focus still firmly on motorsports)
New Directions in Race Car Aerodynamics,
Designing for Speed, Joseph Katz, Robert Bentley, Inc.
Automotive Publishers,Cambridge, MA ISBN 0-8376-0142-8
Another interesting aero survey book is:
Competition Car Downforce, A Practical Guide,
Simon McBeath, G.T.Foulis & Company, Haynes Publishing,
Sparkford, Nr Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 7JJ, Newbury Park,
CA, 1998. ISBN 0-85429-977-7.
And of course:
Ref 6-80: Race Car Engineering and Mechanics, Paul Van Valkenburg,
Published by author: Box 3611 Seal Beach, CA 90740, 1992.
(or HP Books, NY, NY. ) ISBN 0-9617425-0-X
and
"Race Car Vehicle Dynamics," W.F. Milliken and D.L. Milliken,
SAE, 1995. ISBN-1-56091-526-9
Offtopic a bit (although the book does have some discussion of dynamics
and car setup, that isn't the main focus), is an interesting new book:
The Successful Race Car Driver, A Career Development Handbook,
Robert Metcalf, SAE, Warrendale, PA, 1999. ISBN 0-7680-0497-7,
SAE Order Number R-254 htp://www.sae.org
I like it because (as in Drive to Win) it covers all the other things
a professional raceer needs to be on top of besides the driving.
