Well...
It's a bit of all of this. Papyrus was very lucky and found that :
- The Widescreen version makes it looks "historic" with a special touch to
it.
- The Widescreen makes a better framerate, since you only see around 65% of
the screen.
But... What's the need of all the up and down black stuff ? Nothing. Think
about this. Put the***pit way low at the bottom of the screen. And take
all the bottom black box, put it up and fill all of it with the sky. So now,
we have more than 50% of the screen (because the Letterbox version has also
sky at the up of the picture). It's a no-win situation for everybody,
because there is no advantages to this.
The same thing was input into Nascar2, where there is only around 40% of the
screen who is really the "outside" of the***pit. And you didn't had this
problem in Icr2, since the sky was nothing more than a big blue spot.
So it's a little bit of the 2, better framerate and Historical looking at
the same time. IMHO

I don`t agree, the only reason to have a 16x9 ratio is for the frame rate, and
untill we can get wide screen monitors,I would rather the the whole screen
filled as in F1RS (4x3 ratio)

So get out the grease pencils and draw in some more sky and
surrounding***pit.
So simple, yet so much angst :)

Just pretend that the black bits above and below the actual picture are
(a) the peak of your helmet and (b) the bottom rim of your goggles! :-)
See? problem fixed!!

I was inspired by this to mess about with my screen controls so the
picture fills the screen. Hard to ignore the oval wheel and mirrors, but
the bigger picture was... well, more impressive somehow. Not sure about
anyone else but my steering wheel is about a foot away from the monitor if
I move everything as close as possible, and I tend to sit back at 2/3's
arm's length. Anyone with less than a 21" monitor is looking at a fairly
reduced piece of real estate from that distance.
I think what I'd like to see is the kind of option you get on TV's these
days, where you can choose whether you see the whole picture with black
bits or just the middle 2/3's. That would probably be a problem in serious
racing (losing much of the mirrors) but it seems like a valid option if
the graphics engine can support it.
Thinking about this has also reminded me that I often start leaning back
in a comfortable position in my chair, and end up nearer the screen ---
chest much closer to the wheel -- as I get more intent upon the driving.
Getting "sucked in" to the action I suppose. The closer I get (the bigger
the picture) the easier I find it to judge braking points etc... and yes,
my eyesight's fine thank you :-)
So I guess I'm saying that while I think the wide screen format is an
excellent format. But for anyone with less than 17" it must be a drawback,
and it'd be nice to have the choice of a different format. Failing that
I'll settle for a free 21" monitor, but I don't think they'll fit in the
GPL box will they?
