Adding a gear shifter to steering wheel

by B. Jon » Sun, 07 Sep 2003 02:59:49

Hey guys.
My wife has pretty much committed to buying me a PC steering wheel for
my birthday next week. I've asked her for the Logitech Formula Force
GP.
I figure a neat little project down the road might be to add on a
shifter to it. Has anyone done this?
Is there maybe a seperate shifter with it's on usb interface I can
buy?

Thanks.

If she can swing it, get the Momo, 10 times better wheel,
than the GP. Even if it is the cheaper Momo, it already has a shifter.
Should be able to get it only for less than $100.00

Yeah, I thought about asking for the momo but if I asked for a $100 PC
steering wheel...well, I just know better by now.

Thanks, Goy. I saw the act-labs shifter after posting my message but
then read a review on techtv's website. They seemed disappointed by
the lack of support for the shifter.
Have you had any experience with it as an add-on?

Well, it's probably cheaper than the wheel you're getting and then
buying a separate shifter afterwards, but I guess you're planning to
sneak the shifter past her or something :-)

Fraid not, I do own one, but it's sitting on my shelf for the time being
as I really don't have room for it on my desk right now and my trusty
old Thrustmaster Nascar PRO wheel has a basic shifter

I'm planning to build a***pit of sorts at some point and the shifter
will part of that :-), I have however opened the box and done some "dry
runs" :-), and it feels very good, with a slightly notchy, but positive,
action, bit like you'd expect from a shifter in a racing car I suppose

Thanks. Just read the thread.

I plan on spending a lot of time with "F1 Challenge '99-02" once the
wheel arrives (this week - I was cursed with a birthday of 9/11.
Wasn't so bad 'til a couple years ago).

There are a few home built one around, some using gameport and others based on a
USB gamepad (IMHO the USB one is easier than the gameport version).  They use
the same software as the act-labs shifter. A few links:
